Ordinal Numbers and Dates in Ukrainian

Overview

Ordinal numbers (first, second, third...) in Ukrainian function as adjectives and must agree with their noun in gender, number, and case. At the CEFR B1 level, ordinal numbers are essential for expressing dates, centuries, floor numbers, and rankings. Ukrainian date format uses ordinal numbers with specific case patterns that differ from English conventions.

The date system in Ukrainian puts the day before the month, with the day as a neuter ordinal in nominative or genitive (depending on context) and the month in genitive. Understanding this pattern is crucial for reading and writing dates correctly.

Ordinals Decline as Adjectives

They agree in gender, number, case with their noun:

• перший день (m) -- first day
• перша книга (f) -- first book
• перше число (n) -- first date/number

Common Mistakes

Using cardinal instead of ordinal for dates

• Wrong: Сьогодні один березня.
• Right: Сьогодні перше березня.
• Why: Dates use ordinal numbers (neuter to agree with "число").

Wrong case for "on a date"

• Wrong: Перше березня я приїду.
• Right: Першого березня я приїду.
• Why: "On a specific date" uses genitive case.

Not declining compound ordinals correctly

• Wrong: двадцять перший березня (masculine for date)
• Right: двадцять перше березня (neuter)
• Why: Only the last element of a compound ordinal declines, and dates are neuter.

Usage Notes

In compound ordinal numbers (21st, 32nd, etc.), only the last word is ordinal: двадцять перший (21st), тридцять другий (32nd). The preceding number stays cardinal.

For centuries, use locative: у двадцятому столітті (in the 20th century), у двадцять першому столітті (in the 21st century).
