Irregular Present Tense Patterns in Ukrainian

Неправильний Теперішній Час

Overview

Many common Ukrainian verbs undergo stem changes in the present tense that cannot be predicted from the infinitive alone. At the CEFR A1 level, recognizing these patterns is important because they affect some of the most frequently used verbs in the language.

These irregularities include consonant alternations (с→ш, т→ч, д→дж, з→ж), vowel changes (fleeting vowels, stem vowel shifts), and complete stem replacements. While the changes follow certain patterns, the safest approach is to learn the first-person singular present form alongside each infinitive, since it reveals any stem changes.

How It Works

Consonant Alternations

Infinitive Present 1sg Change
писати пишу с → ш
казати кажу з → ж
платити плачу т → ч
ходити ходжу д → дж
просити прошу с → ш

Vowel Changes

Infinitive Present 1sg Change
спати сплю а drops, л appears
стояти стою я → ю
брати беру а → е
звати зову а → о

Verbs with Unique Present Stems

Infinitive Present Stem Example
їсти їм, їси, їсть Completely irregular
дати дам, даси, дасть Irregular (perfective)
бути є (present, usually omitted) Suppletive

Common Mistakes

Regularizing irregular stems

  • Wrong: Я писаю. or Я спаю.
  • Right: Я пишу. Я сплю.
  • Why: These verbs have mandatory stem changes that must be memorized.

Applying the wrong consonant change

  • Wrong: Я ходю. (missing the д→дж change)
  • Right: Я ходжу.
  • Why: The specific consonant alternation for each verb must be learned individually.

Extending changes beyond first person

  • Wrong: Ти пишеш is correct, but assuming all forms change like 1sg.
  • Right: Many consonant changes occur only in 1sg (for 2nd conjugation) or throughout (for 1st conjugation).
  • Why: The scope of stem changes varies by conjugation class.

Usage Notes

The first-person singular form is the best diagnostic for stem changes. When learning a new verb, always check its 1sg present form. Dictionaries typically list both the infinitive and the first-person present.

Consonant alternations in second conjugation verbs (говорити → говорю, бачити → бачу) affect only the first-person singular. In first conjugation verbs (писати → пишу, пишеш, пише...), the change often affects the entire present tense paradigm.

Practice Tips

  1. Infinitive + 1sg pairs: For every new verb, memorize the pair: спати/сплю, писати/пишу, брати/беру.
  2. Consonant change table: Build a reference table of all consonant alternation patterns you encounter.
  3. Conjugation practice: After learning the 1sg, conjugate the full present tense to see where changes persist.
