Indirect Speech in Ukrainian

Overview

Indirect (reported) speech is used to convey what someone said, asked, or requested without quoting them directly. At the CEFR B2 level, mastering indirect speech is necessary for retelling conversations, summarizing arguments, and navigating formal and academic communication.

Ukrainian indirect speech uses що-clauses for statements, чи-clauses for yes/no questions, and щоб-clauses for requests and commands. Unlike English, Ukrainian does not systematically shift tenses in reported speech -- the original tense is often preserved, which simplifies the system in some ways.

The key challenge lies in correctly transforming direct speech pronouns and choosing the right conjunction for each type of reported utterance.

How It Works

Reported Statements: що

• Direct: Вона сказала: "Я втомлена."
• Indirect: Вона сказала, що втомлена.

Reported Questions: чи (yes/no) / question word

• Direct: Він запитав: "Ти прийдеш?"
• Indirect: Він запитав, чи прийду.

Reported Commands/Requests: щоб + past tense

• Direct: Він сказав: "Прийди!"
• Indirect: Він сказав (просив), щоб я прийшов.

Tense in Reported Speech

Ukrainian generally preserves the original tense:

• "Я працюю" → Сказав, що працює. (preserves present)
• "Я приїду" → Сказав, що приїде. (preserves future)

Common Mistakes

Shifting tense unnecessarily

• Wrong: Він сказав, що працював. (when he actually said "I work/am working")
• Right: Він сказав, що працює.
• Why: Ukrainian typically preserves the original tense in reported speech.

Using що for reported commands

• Wrong: Він сказав, що я прийду. (statement instead of command)
• Right: Він сказав, щоб я прийшов.
• Why: Commands and requests use щоб + past tense form.

Forgetting pronoun adjustment

• Wrong: Він сказав, що я втомлений. (when "він" said "I am tired")
• Right: Він сказав, що він втомлений.
• Why: Pronouns must shift to reflect the speaker's perspective.

Usage Notes

The preservation of original tense makes Ukrainian reported speech simpler than English in this regard. However, when the reported event is clearly past from the reporter's perspective, a tense shift may occur naturally.

Reporting verbs include: сказати (say), казати (say, imperfective), запитати (ask), відповісти (reply), пояснити (explain), порадити (advise), попросити (request), наказати (order).

Practice Tips

1. Direct-to-indirect conversion: Take dialogues and convert all direct speech to indirect.
2. Conjunction matching: Practice choosing що/чи/щоб based on the type of original utterance.
3. Pronoun shifting: Focus on correctly adjusting pronouns when converting speech.
