Greetings and Phrases in Ukrainian
Привітання і Фрази
Overview
Essential greetings and polite phrases are the first things you need when interacting in Ukrainian. At the CEFR A1 level, these formulaic expressions let you navigate basic social situations -- greeting people, expressing gratitude, apologizing, and saying goodbye -- even before you understand the grammar behind each phrase.
Ukrainian greetings reflect the strong formal/informal distinction in the language. Using the right level of formality is socially important and shows respect for Ukrainian cultural norms. The ти/ви distinction carries over into greetings and polite phrases.
Many common phrases involve grammatical structures (like the vocative case or imperative mood) that you will study formally at later levels. For now, learn them as fixed expressions.

Common Mistakes
Using informal greetings in formal situations
- Wrong: Saying Привіт! to a professor or stranger.
- Right: Добрий день! or Вітаю!
- Why: Привіт is strictly informal. Using it with strangers or authority figures is impolite.
Forgetting to match formality in responses
- Wrong: Як справи? to someone you addressed with Ви.
- Right: Як Ваші справи? or Як у Вас справи?
- Why: Once you establish the formal register, all follow-up phrases should match.
Misusing будь ласка
- Wrong: Using будь ласка only as "please."
- Right: It also means "you're welcome" (in response to дякую) and "here you go" (when handing something over).
- Why: Будь ласка is a multi-purpose polite expression.
Usage Notes
Ukrainians tend to greet everyone they encounter in shared spaces (neighbors, colleagues, shop staff). A simple "Добрий день!" goes a long way. In western Ukraine, "Слава Україні!" (Glory to Ukraine) with the response "Героям слава!" (Glory to the heroes) is also used as a greeting, especially since 2014.
The phrase "Як справи?" (How are things?) expects a brief answer, similar to English "How are you?" The typical response is "Добре, дякую" (Fine, thanks), even if things are not perfect.
Practice Tips
Morning-to-night sequence: Practice the full daily greeting sequence: Добрий ранок → Добрий день → Добрий вечір → Добраніч.
Introduction role-play: Practice meeting someone new: greeting, name exchange, "nice to meet you," goodbye.
Formal/informal pairs: For each phrase, learn both the ти and ви versions side by side.
