Existential Constructions in Ukrainian
Конструкції Існування
Overview
Existential constructions express whether something exists or is present in a location. At the CEFR A1 level, knowing how to say "there is/are" and "there isn't/aren't" is essential for describing surroundings, asking about availability, and talking about what you have or need.
Ukrainian uses "є" (there is/are) for affirmative existence and "немає" + genitive for negative existence. This system differs from English in two important ways: the negative form requires a case change (to genitive), and the affirmative "є" is often optional when the focus is on identity rather than existence.
These constructions build directly on the verb "бути" (to be) and connect naturally with prepositions of place.
How It Works
Affirmative: є (there is / there are)
Used to assert that something exists or is present:
- На столі є книга. (There is a book on the table.)
- У Києві є музеї. (There are museums in Kyiv.)
"Є" is the same form for singular and plural, present tense.
Negative: немає + genitive
The negative uses "немає" (there is not) followed by the genitive case:
- На столі немає книги. (There is no book on the table.)
- Тут нікого немає. (There is nobody here.)
Question Form
- Чи є тут ресторан? (Is there a restaurant here?)
- Є молоко? (Is there milk? -- informal)
Optional є
When introducing or identifying (not asserting existence), є is often omitted:
- На столі книга. (There's a book on the table. -- neutral)
- На столі є книга. (There IS a book on the table. -- emphatic)
Examples in Context
| Ukrainian | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| На столі є книга. | There is a book on the table. | Affirmative existence |
| У Києві є музеї. | There are museums in Kyiv. | Plural existence |
| Тут нікого немає. | There's nobody here. | Negative + genitive |
| Чи є тут ресторан? | Is there a restaurant here? | Question |
| Немає проблем. | No problem. | Common expression |
| У мене є питання. | I have a question. | Possession = existence |
| Грошей немає. | There's no money. | Genitive in negative |
| Є вода? | Is there water? | Informal question |
| Тут немає Wi-Fi. | There's no Wi-Fi here. | Modern usage |
| Все є, дякую. | Everything is there, thanks. | Confirming availability |
Common Mistakes
Using не є instead of немає
- Wrong: Тут не є ресторану.
- Right: Тут немає ресторану.
- Why: The negative of existential є is the single word "немає," not "не є."
Forgetting genitive after немає
- Wrong: Немає книга.
- Right: Немає книги.
- Why: Немає always requires the genitive case.
Overusing є in non-existential sentences
- Wrong: Він є студент. (identification, not existence)
- Right: Він студент.
- Why: Use є for asserting existence, not for simple identification. In identification, the copula is dropped.
Usage Notes
The немає + genitive pattern is one of the most commonly used constructions in Ukrainian. It covers "there isn't," "I don't have" (У мене немає), and general absence. The genitive case after немає is mandatory and non-negotiable.
In past tense, є becomes не було + genitive: "Не було часу" (There was no time). In future: не буде + genitive: "Не буде проблем" (There will be no problems).
Practice Tips
Room inventory: Describe what is and is not in a room: "Є стіл. Є стілець. Немає вікна."
Availability questions: Practice asking about availability at a store or restaurant: "Є молоко? Є хліб?"
Negative chains: Practice немає with different genitive forms: немає часу, немає грошей, немає проблеми.
