Conditional Sentences in Ukrainian

Умовні Речення

Overview

Conditional sentences express "if...then" relationships and are classified by the reality of the condition. At the CEFR B2 level, you need to distinguish between real conditions (likely to happen), present unreal conditions (contrary to current fact), and past unreal conditions (contrary to past fact).

Ukrainian uses якщо for real conditions and якби for unreal conditions. The verb forms in each clause determine the type of conditional, with past tense + би/б marking unreal conditions and future/present tense marking real ones.

Unlike English with its strict sequence of tenses, Ukrainian conditional formation is relatively straightforward once you master the якщо/якби distinction and the use of the conditional particle.

How It Works

Real Conditional (якщо + future/present)

Condition Result Example
якщо + future future Якщо прийдеш, буду радий.
якщо + present present/future Якщо хочеш, підемо.

Present Unreal (якби + past + conditional)

Якби мав гроші, поїхав би. (If I had money, I would go.)

Past Unreal (якби + був/була + past + conditional)

Якби був знав, був би прийшов. (If I had known, I would have come.)

Summary Table

Type Condition Result
Real якщо + future/present future/present/imperative
Present unreal якби + past past + би
Past unreal якби був + past був би + past

Examples in Context

Ukrainian English Note
Якщо прийдеш, буду радий. If you come, I'll be happy. Real future
Якби мав гроші, поїхав би. If I had money, I would go. Present unreal
Якби був знав, був би прийшов. If I had known, I would have come. Past unreal
Хотів би, щоб ти прийшов. I'd like you to come. Wish + purpose
Якщо йде дощ, беру парасольку. If it rains, I take an umbrella. General real
Якби я був президентом... If I were president... Present unreal
Якщо не прийде, зателефоную. If he doesn't come, I'll call. Real negative
Якби не дощ, пішли б гуляти. If not for the rain, we'd go for a walk. Present unreal
Якщо хочеш, допоможу. If you want, I'll help. Real offer
Якби вона знала, сказала б. If she knew, she would say. Present unreal

Common Mistakes

Mixing якщо and якби

  • Wrong: Якщо мав би гроші... (real conjunction with unreal form)
  • Right: Якби мав гроші...
  • Why: Якщо = real conditions; якби = unreal conditions. Do not mix them.

Using future after якби

  • Wrong: Якби матиму час...
  • Right: Якби мав час...
  • Why: Unreal conditions use past tense forms, never future.

Omitting був for past unreal

  • Wrong: Якби знав, прийшов би. (ambiguous: present or past unreal?)
  • Right: Якби був знав, був би прийшов. (clearly past unreal)
  • Why: Adding "був/була" before the past form makes the past unreal meaning explicit.

Usage Notes

In colloquial speech, the distinction between present and past unreal is often blurred -- "Якби знав, прийшов би" can mean either. Context usually clarifies. The explicit past unreal with "був" is more common in careful speech and writing.

Mixed conditionals (past condition + present result or vice versa) exist but are rare and advanced.

Practice Tips

  1. Three-type drill: For each situation, form all three conditional types (real, present unreal, past unreal).
  2. Якщо vs якби sorting: Given a list of conditions, classify them as real or unreal and choose the right conjunction.
  3. Past unreal practice: Focus on the "якби був + past" pattern, which is the most challenging.
