Adverb Comparison in Ukrainian

Ступенювання Прислівників

Overview

Just as adjectives have comparative and superlative forms, Ukrainian adverbs can be compared to express degrees of manner, frequency, and intensity. At the CEFR B1 level, adverb comparison is necessary for making nuanced statements about how actions are performed and for expressing progressive changes.

Ukrainian adverb comparatives are formed similarly to adjective comparatives, using the suffix -ше or -іше, and superlatives add the prefix най-. Several high-frequency adverbs have irregular comparative forms that must be memorized.

How It Works

Regular Comparative Formation

Adverb Comparative Superlative
швидко (quickly) швидше найшвидше
повільно (slowly) повільніше найповільніше
високо (high) вище найвище
далеко (far) далі найдалі
часто (often) частіше найчастіше

Irregular Comparatives

Adverb Comparative Superlative
добре (well) краще найкраще
погано (badly) гірше найгірше
багато (much) більше найбільше
мало (little) менше найменше
рано (early) раніше найраніше

Comparison Structures

  • за + accusative: Він говорить краще за мене. (He speaks better than me.)
  • ніж: Вона бігає швидше, ніж я. (She runs faster than I.)
  • дедалі + comparative: дедалі більше (more and more)
  • чим...тим: Чим більше, тим краще. (The more, the better.)

Examples in Context

Ukrainian English Note
швидко → швидше → найшвидше quickly → more quickly → most quickly Regular
Говорить краще за мене. He/She speaks better than me. Irregular + за
Найгірше випало йому. He ended up the worst. Superlative
дедалі більше more and more Progressive
Працює ефективніше. Works more efficiently. Comparative
Прийшов раніше за всіх. Arrived earlier than everyone. Irregular + за
Говори тихіше! Speak more quietly! Imperative + comparative
Чим швидше, тим краще. The faster, the better. Correlative
Бігай частіше. Run more often. Frequency comparative
Вона найкраще знає. She knows best. Superlative

Common Mistakes

Using більш with short adverbs

  • Wrong: більш швидко
  • Right: швидше
  • Why: Common short adverbs use synthetic comparatives, not analytic forms.

Forgetting irregular forms

  • Wrong: добріше (attempting regular formation)
  • Right: краще
  • Why: Добре → краще is irregular and must be memorized.

Wrong comparison structure

  • Wrong: швидше від мене (using від instead of за)
  • Right: швидше за мене
  • Why: Adverb comparison uses за + accusative or ніж, not від.

Usage Notes

The progressive construction "дедалі + comparative" (more and more / less and less) is very productive: дедалі більше (more and more), дедалі менше (less and less), дедалі швидше (faster and faster). It is common in both speech and writing.

Adverb comparatives and adjective comparatives are often identical in form (швидший = adj, швидше = adv), differing only in function.

Practice Tips

  1. Irregular adverb drill: Memorize the five most common irregular comparatives: краще, гірше, більше, менше, далі.
  2. Progressive change: Practice дедалі + comparative to describe trends.
  3. Comparison sentences: Compare how different people do things using за and ніж structures.
