Question Words in Turkish

Soru Kelimeleri

Overview

Turkish question words (soru kelimeleri) are essential vocabulary for any beginner. They let you ask about people, places, times, reasons, and quantities — the building blocks of real conversation. Unlike English, which sometimes rearranges word order for questions, Turkish question words simply replace the unknown element in the sentence, and the rest of the word order stays the same.

At the A1 level, mastering these question words opens up a huge range of practical situations: asking for directions, ordering food, making small talk, and understanding what others are asking you. Many of these words also serve as the foundation for relative clauses and indirect questions later on.

One helpful feature of Turkish is that most question words start with the sounds "n" or "k," making them easier to recognize in speech once you know what to listen for.

How It Works

Core Question Words

Turkish English Usage
ne what Ne istiyorsun? (What do you want?)
kim who Kim geldi? (Who came?)
nerede where Neredesin? (Where are you?)
ne zaman when Ne zaman geleceksin? (When will you come?)
nasıl how Nasılsın? (How are you?)
neden / niçin / niye why Neden gülüyorsun? (Why are you laughing?)
kaç how many / how much Kaç yaşındasın? (How old are you?)
hangi which Hangi renk? (Which color?)
ne kadar how much (price/amount) Ne kadar? (How much?)

Word Order with Question Words

The question word goes in the position of the unknown element. Compare:

Statement Question
Ali geldi. (Ali came.) Kim geldi? (Who came?)
Eve gidiyorum. (I'm going home.) Nereye gidiyorsun? (Where are you going?)
Saat üçte geliyorum. (I'm coming at three.) Ne zaman geliyorsun? (When are you coming?)
Bu on lira. (This is ten lira.) Bu ne kadar? (How much is this?)

Derived Location Words

Turkish creates related question words by adding case suffixes to "nere-" (where):

Turkish English Case
nerede where (at) locative
nereye where (to) dative
nereden where (from) ablative
nereli from where (origin) with -li suffix
neresi which part with possessive

Kim with Cases

Similarly, "kim" takes case suffixes:

Turkish English
kim who (subject)
kimi whom (object)
kime to whom
kimde at whose place
kimden from whom
kimin whose

No Question Particle Needed

When you use a question word, you do not add the mı/mi/mu/mü particle. The question word itself signals that it is a question:

  • Neredesin? (Where are you?) — correct
  • Neredesin mi? — incorrect

Examples in Context

Turkish English Note
Bu ne? What is this? Basic identification
Kim arıyor? Who is calling? Subject question
Neredesin? Where are you? Location
Ne zaman başlıyor? When does it start? Time
Nasılsın? How are you? Greeting
Neden geç kaldın? Why were you late? Reason
Kaç kişi? How many people? Quantity
Hangi otobüs? Which bus? Selection
Bu ne kadar? How much is this? Price
Nereden geliyorsun? Where are you coming from? Origin
Kimin arabası bu? Whose car is this? Possession
Nasıl gidebilirim? How can I get there? Method/direction

Common Mistakes

Adding the Question Particle with Question Words

  • Wrong: Neredesin mi?
  • Right: Neredesin?
  • Why: Question words already mark the sentence as a question. The mı/mi particle is only for yes/no questions.

Confusing Nerede, Nereye, and Nereden

  • Wrong: Nerede gidiyorsun? (for "where are you going?")
  • Right: Nereye gidiyorsun?
  • Why: "Nerede" means "at where" (static location). For movement toward, use "nereye" (to where). For movement from, use "nereden" (from where).

Using Kaç vs. Ne Kadar

  • Wrong: Kaç lira? (sometimes acceptable colloquially, but less precise)
  • Right: Ne kadar? (for price) vs. Kaç tane? (for countable quantity)
  • Why: "Kaç" asks about countable numbers. "Ne kadar" asks about amount or price.

Practice Tips

  • Learn question-answer pairs together. For each question word, learn a standard answer pattern. "Neredesin?" → "Evdeyim" (I'm at home). "Nasılsın?" → "İyiyim" (I'm fine). This builds conversational flow.

  • Practice the nere- family as a group. Nerede, nereye, nereden, nereli, neresi — these five forms cover most location questions. Drill them together to build the case suffix pattern.
