Location and Directions in Turkish

Yer ve Yönler

Overview

Navigating a Turkish city, asking where something is, or giving someone directions all require a set of essential location and direction words. Turkish has a clear and logical system for expressing spatial relationships, and at the A1 level you will learn the foundational vocabulary that makes this possible.

What makes Turkish interesting for expressing location is that many direction words can function as both nouns and adverbs. They also interact with Turkish case suffixes to express movement toward, away from, or at a location. Getting comfortable with these basic words early on will serve you well as your Turkish develops.

How It Works

Basic Location Words

Turkish English Notes
burada / burası here / this place bura- stem
orada / orası there / that place ora- stem
şurada / şurası over there / that place (visible) şura- stem

The -da forms are used as adverbs ("here," "there"), while the -sı forms are used as nouns ("this place," "that place").

Directional Forms

Each location stem takes case suffixes for movement:

Meaning Suffix Bura- Ora- Şura-
at/in -da burada orada şurada
to/toward -ya buraya oraya şuraya
from -dan buradan oradan şuradan

Direction Words

Turkish English
sağ right
sol left
ileri forward
geri back
yukarı up
aşağı down
düz straight
karşı opposite, across

Position Words

Turkish English
önde / önünde in front / in front of
arkada / arkasında behind / behind it
üstünde on top of, above
altında under, below
yanında beside, next to
içinde inside
dışında outside
arasında between

These position words (postpositions) require the preceding noun to take the genitive suffix when a specific possessor is involved: evin önünde (in front of the house).

Common Direction Commands

Turkish English
Sağa dön. Turn right.
Sola dön. Turn left.
Düz git. Go straight.
Geri dön. Turn back.
Yukarı çık. Go up.
Aşağı in. Go down.
İleri git. Go forward.

Notice that direction words take the dative suffix (-a/-e) when indicating movement toward that direction.

Examples in Context

Turkish English Note
Buraya gel. Come here. Dative: movement toward
Sağa dön. Turn right. Dative on direction
Yukarı çık. Go up. Command form
Okul nerede? Where is the school? Basic location question
Banka karşıda. The bank is across the street. Position word
Düz gidin, sonra sola dönün. Go straight, then turn left. Polite direction
Araba evin önünde. The car is in front of the house. Postposition
Oradan buraya kaç dakika? How many minutes from there to here? -dan to -ya

Common Mistakes

Confusing burada/buraya/buradan

  • Wrong: Burada gel. (Come at-here.)
  • Right: Buraya gel. (Come to-here.)
  • Why: Movement toward a place requires the dative (-ya). The locative (-da) means you are already at that place.

Forgetting the Genitive Before Postpositions

  • Wrong: Ev önünde (in front of house — missing genitive)
  • Right: Evin önünde (in front of the house)
  • Why: When specifying whose front/back/side you mean, the possessor noun needs the genitive suffix (-in/-ın/-un/-ün).

Using sağ/sol Without the Dative for Movement

  • Wrong: Sağ dön. (Turn right — missing suffix)
  • Right: Sağa dön. (Turn to-the-right.)
  • Why: Turning involves movement toward a direction, so the dative suffix is needed.

Mixing Up yukarı and üst

  • Wrong: Using them interchangeably in all contexts
  • Right: Yukarı çık (go upstairs) vs. masanın üstünde (on the table)
  • Why: Yukarı indicates upward direction/movement, while üst refers to a surface or top of something.

Practice Tips

  • Walk around your home or neighborhood and describe what you see using location words: Kafe solda, market sağda, park ilerde.
  • Practice giving directions to your home from a well-known landmark, first in writing, then aloud. Use the pattern: düz git, sağa/sola dön, X'in yanında/karşısında.
  • Draw a simple map and label everything with Turkish position words (önünde, arkasında, yanında) to reinforce spatial vocabulary visually.
