Obligation (Kailangan/Dapat/Pwede) in Tagalog
Kailangan/Dapat/Pwede
Overview
Expressing obligation, necessity, and permission is fundamental to daily communication. Tagalog uses three key modal-like expressions: kailangan (need/must), dapat (should/ought to), and pwede/maaari (can/may). These are A1 essentials that let you talk about rules, requirements, abilities, and permissions.
Like gusto and ayaw, these words are pseudo-verbs — they do not conjugate for aspect. They always appear in the same form and are followed by a pronoun (with linker) and then a verb in the contemplated (infinitive) form. This makes them structurally simple once you understand the pattern.
Kailangan expresses the strongest obligation (must, need to), dapat is slightly softer (should, ought to), and pwede/maaari expresses possibility or permission (can, may). Maaari is the formal variant of pwede.
How It Works
Basic pattern:
Modal + pronoun + -ng + verb (contemplated form)
| Modal | Meaning | Example | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| kailangan | need/must | Kailangan kong pumunta. | I need to go. |
| dapat | should | Dapat kang mag-aral. | You should study. |
| pwede | can/may | Pwede ba akong umupo? | May I sit down? |
| maaari | can/may (formal) | Maaari bang magtanong? | May I ask? |
Negation:
| Positive | Negative | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Kailangan | Hindi kailangan | Hindi kailangan pumunta. (No need to go.) |
| Dapat | Hindi dapat | Hindi dapat kumain dito. (One should not eat here.) |
| Pwede | Hindi pwede | Hindi pwede dito. (Not allowed here.) |
Making questions with ba:
Kailangan ko ba? — Do I need to? Pwede ba? — Is it allowed? / Can I? Dapat ba akong pumunta? — Should I go?

Common Mistakes
Wrong Verb Form After Modals
- Wrong: Kailangan kong kumain. (using completed -um- form)
- Right: Kailangan kong kumain. (contemplated form — which happens to look the same for -um- verbs)
- Note: For mag- verbs: Kailangan kong mag-aral. (contemplated), NOT Kailangan kong nag-aral. (completed).
Forgetting the Linker
- Wrong: Kailangan ko pumunta.
- Right: Kailangan kong pumunta.
- Why: The linker -ng connects the pronoun to the following verb.
Confusing Pwede and Kailangan
- Wrong: Pwede akong pumunta. (when you mean obligation)
- Right: Kailangan kong pumunta. (I need to go.)
- Why: Pwede means "can/may" (permission or ability), not "must/need."
Using Maaari in Casual Speech
- Wrong: Maaari ba akong kumain? (overly formal at a family dinner)
- Right: Pwede ba akong kumain?
- Why: Maaari is formal. In casual settings, pwede sounds more natural.
Practice Tips
Rules and regulations: Practice expressing rules: Hindi pwede mag-phone sa klase. Dapat kang magdala ng ID. Kailangan mong mag-sign in. This builds real-world vocabulary.
Permission practice: Use Pwede ba...? in everyday situations: Pwede bang manghiram ng bolpen? Pwede bang pumunta sa banyo?
Should vs. must: Create pairs showing the strength difference: Dapat kang kumain ng gulay. (You should eat vegetables.) vs. Kailangan mong uminom ng gamot. (You must take medicine.)
