Locative/Directional Focus -An Verbs in Tagalog

Pandiwang -An (Pokus sa Pinangyarihan)

Overview

The -an suffix marks verbs where the ang-marked topic is the location, direction, or recipient of an action. This A2 topic completes the core set of Tagalog focus affixes: -um-/mag- (actor), -in (object), i- (benefactive/instrument), and -an (locative/directional). With all four, you can highlight any participant in a sentence.

Locative focus is common when you want to emphasize where an action happens or who an action is directed toward. For example, Pinuntahan niya ang palengke (He/She went to the market) puts the market — the destination — as the topic. This differs from actor focus Pumunta siya sa palengke (He/She went to the market) which puts the person as the topic.

The -an suffix is also frequently used with verbs where the "location" is metaphorically a person — the person you help, the person you buy for, the person you speak to. This makes -an verbs extremely versatile and common.

How It Works

Aspect formation for -an verbs:

Aspect Pattern Root: punta (go) Root: bili (buy)
Completed -in- infix + -an pinuntahan binilhan
Incompleted -in- + CV reduplication + -an pinupuntahan binibilhan
Contemplated CV reduplication + -an pupuntahan bibilhan

Steps for each aspect:

  1. Completed: -in- infix + root + -anp-in-unta-han = pinuntahan
  2. Incompleted: -in- + CV reduplication + root + -anp-in-u-punta-han = pinupuntahan
  3. Contemplated: CV reduplication + root + -anpu-punta-han = pupuntahan

Sentence structure:

Verb + ng-pronoun (actor) + ang-noun (location/recipient)

Pinuntahan niya ang palengke. — He/She went to the market. (market = topic) Tinulungan ko siya. — I helped him/her. (him/her = topic)

Examples in Context

Linisan mo ang kwarto. Clean the room. Room = topic (location)
Pinaglaruan nila ang parke. They played at the park. Park = topic

Common Mistakes

Confusing -An and -In Focus

  • Wrong: Binilin ko si Ana ng regalo. (using -in for recipient focus)
  • Right: Binilhan ko si Ana ng regalo. (I bought Ana a gift.)
  • Why: -In puts focus on the object bought. -An puts focus on the person or place.

Forgetting to Add -An in All Aspects

  • Wrong: Pinunta niya ang palengke. (missing -an)
  • Right: Pinuntahan niya ang palengke.
  • Why: The -an suffix must appear in all three aspects, combined with the appropriate infix/reduplication.

Treating the Ang-Phrase as the Actor

  • Wrong: Thinking ang palengke in Pinuntahan niya ang palengke is the doer
  • Right: Ang palengke is the topic (location). Niya is the actor.
  • Why: In -an focus, the ang-phrase is the location/recipient, not the doer.

Practice Tips

  1. Location actions: Practice -an verbs with places: Pupuntahan ko ang opisina. Linisan niya ang kusina. Pinaglaruan nila ang bakuran. This reinforces the location focus.

  2. Person-directed verbs: Many -an verbs work with people as "locations": Tinulungan, kinausap, tinawagan, binisitahan. Practice these with different pronouns.

  3. Four-focus comparison: For the root bili (buy), compare all focuses: Bumili ako (actor), Binili ko ang sapatos (object), Ibinili ko siya (benefactive), Binilhan ko siya (locative/recipient).
