Basic Prepositions and Location in Tagalog
Overview
Tagalog handles location and direction primarily through the case marker sa combined with location nouns. Rather than having many separate prepositions like English (in, on, under, beside), Tagalog uses sa plus a specific location word: sa loob (inside), sa labas (outside), sa ibabaw (on top), sa ilalim (under). This A1 topic is essential for describing where things are and where people go.
The word nasa (a contraction of na + sa) specifically indicates current location — where something is right now. In contrast, bare sa indicates direction or destination — where something is going or was placed. This distinction between static location (nasa) and direction (sa) is important to grasp early.
These location expressions appear in nearly every conversation about daily life, from giving directions to describing your home. Once you learn the core location nouns, you can combine them with sa to express any spatial relationship.
How It Works
Location nouns with sa:
| Tagalog | English | Example |
|---|---|---|
| sa loob ng | inside | sa loob ng bahay (inside the house) |
| sa labas ng | outside | sa labas ng eskwelahan (outside the school) |
| sa ibabaw ng | on top of | sa ibabaw ng mesa (on the table) |
| sa ilalim ng | under | sa ilalim ng mesa (under the table) |
| sa tabi ng | beside | sa tabi ng simbahan (beside the church) |
| sa harap ng | in front of | sa harap ng tindahan (in front of the store) |
| sa likod ng | behind | sa likod ng bahay (behind the house) |
| sa gitna ng | in the middle of | sa gitna ng daan (in the middle of the road) |
Nasa for current location:
Nasa + location
Nasa bahay ako. — I am at home. Nasa eskwelahan siya. — He/She is at school.
Sa for direction/destination:
Verb + sa + location
Pumunta siya sa eskwelahan. — He/She went to school. Pupunta ako sa palengke. — I will go to the market.

Common Mistakes
Confusing Nasa and Sa
- Wrong: Sa bahay ako. (when meaning "I am at home")
- Right: Nasa bahay ako.
- Why: Use nasa for current, static location. Use sa for direction or destination.
Forgetting Ng After Location Nouns
- Wrong: sa ibabaw mesa
- Right: sa ibabaw ng mesa
- Why: The location noun connects to the following noun with ng (of). It is like saying "on top of the table."
Using English Preposition Logic
- Wrong: Sa ang bahay (trying to say "at the house")
- Right: Sa bahay or Nasa bahay
- Why: Sa and nasa already include the prepositional meaning. Do not add ang after them.
Practice Tips
Room description: Describe where everything in your room is located: Nasa ibabaw ng mesa ang libro. Nasa ilalim ng kama ang sapatos. This drills location nouns naturally.
Nasa vs. sa sorting: Make two columns and sort ten sentences into "current location" (nasa) vs. "direction" (sa). This builds the distinction clearly.
Direction giving: Practice giving simple directions: Pumunta ka sa kanan. Nasa tabi ng simbahan ang tindahan. Giving directions is a practical real-world skill.
