Basic Conjunctions in Tagalog
Mga Pangunahing Pangatnig
Overview
Conjunctions are the glue that connects words, phrases, and clauses in any language. Tagalog's basic conjunctions — at (and), o (or), pero/ngunit (but), kasi/dahil (because), and kaya (so) — are among the most frequently used words in the language. Learning these at the A1 level allows you to build longer, more natural sentences immediately.
Most Tagalog conjunctions work similarly to their English counterparts, making them relatively easy to learn. The main thing to know is that Tagalog offers casual and formal variants for several conjunctions: pero (casual) vs. ngunit (formal) for "but," and kasi (casual) vs. dahil (formal) for "because." Choosing between them signals your register.
These five conjunctions will carry you through most everyday conversations. As you advance, you will learn more complex connectors, but these basics remain the foundation.
How It Works
| Tagalog | English | Register | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| at | and | Neutral | Kumain ako at uminom. |
| o | or | Neutral | Kape o tsaa? |
| pero | but | Casual | Gusto ko pero mahal. |
| ngunit | but | Formal | Maganda ngunit mahal. |
| kasi | because | Casual | Hindi siya pumunta kasi may sakit siya. |
| dahil | because | Formal | Hindi siya pumunta dahil may sakit siya. |
| kaya | so/therefore | Neutral | Pagod ako kaya matutulog ako. |
Usage notes:
- At can connect nouns, adjectives, verbs, or clauses: kape at tsaa (coffee and tea), kumain at uminom (ate and drank).
- Kasi often appears in the middle or end of a sentence in casual speech: Hindi ako pumunta, kasi pagod ako. (I didn't go because I'm tired.)
- Dahil is more often sentence-initial in formal writing: Dahil may sakit siya, hindi siya pumunta. (Because he/she is sick, he/she did not go.)

Common Mistakes
Using Kasi at the Start of a Formal Sentence
- Wrong: Kasi may sakit siya, hindi siya pumunta. (too casual for formal writing)
- Right: Dahil may sakit siya, hindi siya pumunta.
- Why: Kasi is casual and typically mid-sentence. For formal writing or speech, use dahil.
Confusing At and Pati
- Wrong: Using pati interchangeably with at
- Right: at = and (general); pati = including/even
- Why: Pati adds an inclusive or surprising element: Pati si Maria, dumating. (Even Maria came.)
Overusing English Conjunctions
- Wrong: Gusto ko but mahal.
- Right: Gusto ko pero mahal.
- Why: In Tagalog conversation (as opposed to Taglish), use Tagalog conjunctions for natural-sounding speech.
Practice Tips
Sentence combining: Take pairs of simple sentences and combine them with each conjunction. "I am tired" + "I will rest" → Pagod ako kaya magpapahinga ako.
Register switching: Practice saying the same idea in casual and formal registers: Hindi ako pumunta kasi umuulan. → Hindi ako pumunta dahil umuulan.
Conversation chains: Build a chain: Kumain ako at pagkatapos nag-aral ako, pero nahirapan ako kasi mahirap ang leksyon.
