Basic Adjectives (Ma-) in Tagalog

Mga Pang-uri (Ma-)

Overview

Most Tagalog adjectives are formed by adding the prefix ma- to a root word. For example, ganda (beauty) becomes maganda (beautiful), and bait (kindness) becomes mabait (kind). This is one of the most productive and satisfying patterns to learn at the A1 level because it instantly multiplies your vocabulary.

Adjectives in Tagalog can appear before or after the noun they describe, but they must be connected by the linker na or its clitic form -ng. The linker is a small but essential element that glues the adjective and noun together. You will use ma- adjectives in nearly every sentence that describes people, things, or situations.

Unlike English, Tagalog adjectives can function as predicates on their own without a separate "to be" verb. Saying Maganda ang bulaklak (Beautiful the flower) is a complete sentence meaning "The flower is beautiful."

How It Works

Forming ma- adjectives:

Root Ma- Adjective English
ganda maganda beautiful
bait mabait kind
laki malaki big
liit maliit small
sarap masarap delicious
init mainit hot
lamig malamig cold
taas mataas tall/high
baba mababa short/low
buti mabuti good

Using the linker (na / -ng):

  • Use -ng when the preceding word ends in a vowel: malaking bahay (big house)
  • Use na when the preceding word ends in a consonant: mabait na bata (kind child)
Adjective + Noun Using Linker English
malaki + bahay malaking bahay big house
maganda + tanawin magandang tanawin beautiful scenery
mabait + bata mabait na bata kind child
masarap + pagkain masarap na pagkain delicious food

As a predicate (no linker needed):

Ma-adjective + ang + Noun

Maganda ang bulaklak. — The flower is beautiful.

Common Mistakes

Forgetting the Linker

  • Wrong: malaki bahay
  • Right: malaking bahay
  • Why: The linker (na or -ng) is required between an adjective and the noun it modifies.

Using the Wrong Linker Form

  • Wrong: maganda na tanawin
  • Right: magandang tanawin
  • Why: When the adjective ends in a vowel (maganda), use -ng attached to it, not the separate word na.

Adding "Is" Separately

  • Wrong: Ang bulaklak ay is maganda.
  • Right: Ang bulaklak ay maganda. or Maganda ang bulaklak.
  • Why: Tagalog does not use a separate "is" — the adjective alone serves as the predicate.

Assuming All Adjectives Use Ma-

  • Wrong: Mapayat siya. (trying ma- + payat)
  • Right: Payat siya. (He/She is thin.)
  • Why: Some adjectives do not take the ma- prefix. Payat (thin) is already an adjective on its own.

Practice Tips

  1. Describe your surroundings: Look around and describe five things using ma- adjectives: Malaki ang mesa. Maliit ang baso. Mainit ang kape. This builds vocabulary while practicing the predicate pattern.

  2. Pair adjectives with nouns: Pick ten ma- adjectives and practice connecting each to a noun using the correct linker (-ng or na). Say them aloud to build muscle memory.

  3. Opposites game: Learn adjectives in pairs — malaki/maliit (big/small), mainit/malamig (hot/cold), mataas/mababa (tall/short). This doubles your vocabulary efficiently.
