Prepositional Case in Russian

Предложный падеж

Overview

The prepositional case (предложный падеж) is unique among Russian cases because it is never used without a preposition -- hence its name. At the A1 level, it is one of the first cases learners encounter because its endings are relatively simple and it covers essential functions: expressing location (where something is) and talking about topics (what you are discussing).

The most common prepositions used with this case are в (in) and на (on/at) for location, and о/об (about) for the topic of conversation or thought. The prepositional case answers the questions где? (where?), о ком? (about whom?), and о чём? (about what?).

The prepositional case is often the first case where learners notice how Russian prepositions work differently from English. The same preposition в means "to" with the accusative (direction) but "in" with the prepositional (location). This direction-vs-location contrast is fundamental to Russian spatial expressions.

How It Works

Prepositional Case Endings

Gender/Type Nominative Prepositional Rule
Masculine (consonant) стол столе + е
Masculine (-й) музей музее -й → -е
Masculine (-ь) словарь словаре -ь → -е
Feminine (-а) школа школе -а → -е
Feminine (-я) неделя неделе -я → -е
Feminine (-ь) дверь двери -ь → -и
Feminine (-ия) Россия России -ия → -ии
Neuter (-о) окно окне -о → -е
Neuter (-е) море море no change
Neuter (-ие) здание здании -ие → -ии

Common Prepositions + Prepositional

Preposition Meaning Example
в in, at в школе (at school)
на on, at на столе (on the table)
о (об before vowels) about о работе (about work)

Special -у/-ю Ending (Locative)

Some masculine nouns take -у/-ю instead of -е after в/на for location:

  • в лесу (in the forest), на полу (on the floor), в саду (in the garden), в шкафу (in the closet)

Examples in Context

Russian English Note
Я живу в Москве. I live in Moscow. Location: в + prep
Книга на столе. The book is on the table. Location: на + prep
Мы говорим о работе. We are talking about work. Topic: о + prep
Он думает о матери. He thinks about his mother. Fem -ь → -и
Она учится в университете. She studies at the university. Masc: + е
Дети в школе. The children are at school. Location
Я читаю о России. I am reading about Russia. -ия → -ии
Мы живём в здании. We live in a building. -ие → -ии
Он в лесу. He is in the forest. Special -у ending
Мы говорим об Анне. We are talking about Anna. об before vowel

Common Mistakes

Confusing accusative (direction) with prepositional (location)

  • Wrong: Я живу в Москву. (accusative = direction)
  • Right: Я живу в Москве. (prepositional = location)
  • Why: В + accusative means moving toward; в + prepositional means being at a location.

Using -е for -ия/-ие nouns

  • Wrong: в Россие, в здание
  • Right: в России, в здании
  • Why: Nouns ending in -ия and -ие take -ии in the prepositional case, not -е.

Forgetting the special -у locative

  • Wrong: в лесе, на поле
  • Right: в лесу, на полу
  • Why: A group of common masculine nouns use -у/-ю for location. These must be memorized.

Practice Tips

  • Describe where things are in your room using в and на: Книга на столе, телефон в кармане. This builds automatic prepositional case usage.
  • Practice the direction vs. location contrast in pairs: Я иду в школу (direction, accusative) / Я в школе (location, prepositional).
