Aspect Pair Formation in Russian

Образование видовых пар

Overview

Understanding how imperfective and perfective verb pairs are formed is essential at the B1 level for expanding vocabulary efficiently and recognizing unfamiliar verbs. When you encounter a new verb, knowing the formation patterns allows you to predict its aspectual partner, effectively doubling your productive vocabulary.

Russian aspect pairs are formed through four main mechanisms: prefixation (the most common), suffixation, suppletion (completely different stems), and stress shift. Each mechanism has its own patterns and productivity. Prefixation is the dominant method, where a prefix is added to an imperfective verb to create a perfective partner, but the challenge is that prefixes can also change the meaning of the verb.

The key insight is that one prefix per verb serves as a "pure perfectivizer" -- it adds completion without changing the core meaning. Other prefixes create new verbs with new meanings (and new imperfective partners through suffixation). Recognizing which prefix is the "empty" perfectivizer for each verb is a skill that develops over time.

How It Works

Method 1: Prefixation (Imperfective → Perfective)

Imperfective Perfective Prefix
читать прочитать про-
писать написать на-
делать сделать с-
строить построить по-
готовить приготовить при-

Method 2: Suffixation (Perfective → Imperfective)

When a prefix creates a new meaning, a secondary imperfective is formed by suffix change:

Perfective (new meaning) Imperfective (derived) Pattern
решить (solve) решать -ить → -ать
получить (receive) получать -ить → -ать
объяснить (explain) объяснять -ить → -ять
открыть (open) открывать -ыть → -ывать
рассказать (tell) рассказывать -ать → -ывать

Method 3: Suppletion (Different Stems)

Imperfective Perfective Meaning
говорить сказать to say
брать взять to take
класть положить to put
ловить поймать to catch
садиться сесть to sit down

Method 4: Stress Shift

Imperfective Perfective Meaning
разрезать (stress: -а́ть) разрезать (stress: -е́зать) to cut
рассыпать (stress: -а́ть) рассыпать (stress: -ы́пать) to spill

Examples in Context

Russian English Note
читать → прочитать (prefix) to read → to read through про- as perfectivizer
решить → решать (suffix change) to solve → to be solving -ить → -ать
брать → взять (suppletion) to take (imperf/perf) Completely different stems
отрезать → отрезать (stress) to cut off (perf/imperf) Only stress differs
писать → написать to write → to write (complete) на- as perfectivizer
открыть → открывать to open → to be opening -ыть → -ывать
получить → получать to receive → to be receiving -ить → -ать
сказать / говорить to say (once) / to speak Suppletive pair
строить → построить to build → to build (complete) по- as perfectivizer
объяснить → объяснять to explain → to be explaining -ить → -ять

Common Mistakes

Assuming any prefix creates a simple aspect pair

  • Wrong: Treating записать as the perfective of писать
  • Right: Записать means "to write down" (new meaning); написать is the perfective of писать
  • Why: Most prefixes change the verb's meaning. Only the "empty" perfectivizing prefix preserves the original meaning.

Not recognizing secondary imperfectives

  • Wrong: Он каждый день открыл окно. (perfective for habitual)
  • Right: Он каждый день открывал окно. (secondary imperfective)
  • Why: Prefixed perfective verbs form new imperfectives through suffixation for habitual/repeated contexts.

Trying to apply one formation pattern to all verbs

  • Wrong: Я набрал книгу (applying на- prefix pattern to брать)
  • Right: Я взял книгу. (suppletive pair)
  • Why: Suppletive pairs must be learned individually; no pattern predicts them.

Practice Tips

  • When learning new verbs, always learn both aspect forms together and note which formation method is used.
  • Group verbs by their perfectivizing prefix (про- verbs, на- verbs, с- verbs, по- verbs) to build pattern recognition.
