Хотеть and Мочь in Russian
Overview
The verbs хотеть (to want) and мочь (to be able to/can) are among the most essential verbs in Russian. At the A1 level, these two verbs allow you to express desires, requests, abilities, and possibilities -- fundamental functions in any conversation. Both verbs are followed by an infinitive, creating the pattern "I want/can + do something."
What makes these verbs notable is their irregular conjugation. Хотеть is a "mixed conjugation" verb -- it uses first conjugation endings in the singular but second conjugation endings in the plural. Мочь has vowel and consonant changes throughout its paradigm. These irregularities must be memorized, as no rule can predict them.
Despite their irregularity, both verbs are so high-frequency that learners internalize their forms quickly through repeated use. They appear in polite requests (Я хотел бы...), ability statements (Я могу...), and many fixed expressions.
How It Works
Хотеть (to want) -- Mixed Conjugation
| Person | Singular | Plural |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | хочу | хотим |
| 2nd | хочешь | хотите |
| 3rd | хочет | хотят |
Note: Singular forms use first conjugation (-ешь, -ет), plural forms use second conjugation (-им, -ите, -ят).
Мочь (can, to be able) -- Irregular
| Person | Singular | Plural |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | могу | можем |
| 2nd | можешь | можете |
| 3rd | может | могут |
Note: The stem alternates between мог- and мож-.
Usage Patterns
Both verbs are followed by an infinitive:
- Я хочу есть. (I want to eat.)
- Я могу помочь. (I can help.)

Common Mistakes
Applying regular conjugation to хотеть
- Wrong: Они хочут or мы хочем
- Right: Они хотят, мы хотим
- Why: Хотеть switches from first to second conjugation in the plural. This mixed pattern is unique and must be memorized.
Confusing мочь and уметь
- Wrong: Using мочь for learned skills (Я могу плавать when meaning "I know how to swim")
- Right: Я умею плавать. (I know how to swim -- learned skill) vs. Я могу плавать сегодня. (I can swim today -- circumstantial ability)
- Why: Мочь expresses possibility or circumstantial ability; уметь expresses a learned skill.
Forgetting the infinitive after these verbs
- Wrong: Я хочу в магазин. (grammatically possible but implies an omitted verb of motion)
- Right: Я хочу пойти в магазин. (I want to go to the store.)
- Why: While ellipsis is sometimes natural, beginners should include the infinitive for clarity.
Practice Tips
- Make daily "want" and "can" lists in Russian: Я хочу..., Я могу..., Я не могу... This builds both conjugation reflexes and useful vocabulary.
- Practice polite requests using both verbs: Вы можете помочь? Вы хотите чай?
