Relative Pronouns in Polish
Overview
Relative pronouns introduce relative clauses that describe or identify a noun. The main relative pronoun in Polish is który/która/które (who/which/that), which declines for gender, number, and case. At the B1 level, fluent use of który in various cases is essential for constructing natural-sounding complex sentences.
The gender and number of który match its antecedent (the noun it refers to), while its case depends on its grammatical function within the relative clause. This dual determination makes Polish relative clauses more demanding than English ones, where "who/which/that" do not change form.
In colloquial Polish, co sometimes replaces który, especially after indefinite pronouns like wszystko (everything), nic (nothing), and to (that). The interrogative jaki (what kind of) can also function as a relative pronoun.
How It Works
Determining the form of który
- Gender/Number: Match the antecedent noun. Kobieta (f.) → która; Dom (m.) → który
- Case: Based on function in relative clause. Subject → nominative; direct object → accusative; after preposition → governed case.
Examples of case determination
| Antecedent | Function in relative clause | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| kobieta (f.) | subject | która | Kobieta, która tu mieszka. |
| kobieta (f.) | direct object | którą | Kobieta, którą znam. |
| dom (m.) | location (w + loc.) | w którym | Dom, w którym mieszkam. |
| ludzie (m.pers.pl.) | subject | którzy | Ludzie, którzy przyszli. |
| książka (f.) | about (o + loc.) | o której | Książka, o której mówisz. |
co as relative pronoun
Used after to, wszystko, nic, coś: Wszystko, co potrzebuję (Everything I need).

Common Mistakes
Wrong gender of który
- Wrong: Kobieta, który tu mieszka.
- Right: Kobieta, która tu mieszka.
- Why: Który must match the antecedent's gender. Kobieta is feminine.
Wrong case of który
- Wrong: Dom, który mieszkam. (nominative)
- Right: Dom, w którym mieszkam. (locative after w)
- Why: The case depends on the pronoun's function in the relative clause. "I live in which" requires locative.
Using co in formal writing
- Wrong: Kobieta, co tu mieszka. (in formal text)
- Right: Kobieta, która tu mieszka.
- Why: Co as a relative pronoun is colloquial. Który is standard in writing and formal speech.
Usage Notes
Który is appropriate in all registers. Co is acceptable in speech and informal writing after indefinite pronouns. In formal and academic Polish, który is always preferred. Remember that a comma always precedes the relative clause.
Practice Tips
- Take ten sentences and add relative clauses: Znam kobietę. Kobieta tu mieszka. → Znam kobietę, która tu mieszka.
- Practice który in all cases by creating examples with prepositions: w którym, z którą, o którym, dla którego.
- Pay attention to the masculine personal plural form którzy -- it is distinctive and frequently needed.
