Irregular Present Tense Patterns in Polish

Overview

Several common Polish verbs have stem changes in the present tense that do not follow standard conjugation patterns. At the A1 level, the key verbs with stem alternations include spać (sleep) → śpię, stać (stand) → stoję, brać (take) → biorę, and pisać (write) → piszę. These alternations involve consonant changes, vowel changes, or both.

These stem changes are rooted in historical sound laws and affect some of the most common verbs in Polish. Because they are high-frequency, you will encounter and practice them constantly. The alternations primarily affect the consonant at the end of the stem, with different changes occurring in different persons.

While the changes may seem unpredictable at first, they follow patterns that recur across many verbs. Learning the first person singular form of each verb is the key to predicting the rest of the conjugation.

How It Works

Common stem alternations

Infinitive 1st sg. Change type Pattern
spać śpię p → pi (ś) Consonant softening
stać stoję a → oj Vowel change + j insertion
brać biorę a → ior Vowel change
pisać piszę s → sz Consonant hardening
mówić mówię -- Regular (for reference)
jechać jadę ch → d Consonant change

Full conjugation: spać (to sleep)

Person Singular Plural
ja śpię śpimy
ty śpisz śpicie
on/ona śpi śpią

Full conjugation: brać (to take)

Person Singular Plural
ja biorę bierzemy
ty bierzesz bierzecie
on/ona bierze biorą

Note: brać has two alternating stems: bior- (1st sg., 3rd pl.) and bierz- (others).

Examples in Context

Polish English Note
Śpię. I sleep. spać → śpię
Stoję tutaj. I'm standing here. stać → stoję
Biorę to. I'm taking it. brać → biorę
Piszę list. I'm writing a letter. pisać → piszę
Jadę do pracy. I'm going to work. jechać → jadę
Czy śpisz? Are you sleeping? 2nd person
Stoimy w kolejce. We're standing in line. 1st person plural
Bierzesz kawę? Are you having coffee? 2nd person
One piszą test. They're writing a test. 3rd person plural
On śpi. He's sleeping. 3rd person singular

Common Mistakes

Using the infinitive stem in conjugation

  • Wrong: Spacę. (from spać)
  • Right: Śpię.
  • Why: The stem changes completely in conjugation. The infinitive form does not predict the conjugated stem.

Mixing up the two stems of brać

  • Wrong: Bierzę. (combining wrong stems)
  • Right: Biorę. (1st person uses bior-)
  • Why: Brać alternates between bior- and bierz- depending on the person.

Usage Notes

Stem alternations are consistent across all registers. They are not optional or stylistic -- using the wrong stem is a clear grammatical error. These alternations affect some of the most common verbs in Polish, so mastering them is a practical priority.

Practice Tips

  1. For each irregular verb, memorize the 1st person singular form alongside the infinitive: spać (śpię), stać (stoję), brać (biorę).
  2. Conjugate each irregular verb through all six persons. Write them out to build muscle memory.
  3. Look for patterns: many -ać verbs have similar alternations. Group them and practice together.
