Complex Prepositions in Polish
Złożone Przyimki
Overview
Several Polish prepositions govern different cases depending on whether they express static location or direction of movement. At the B1 level, mastering these dual-case prepositions is essential for accurate expression of spatial and temporal relationships. The most important examples are na (on/onto), w (in/into), and za (behind/in time).
This location-direction distinction is systematic: locative case for "where something is" and accusative for "where something is going." Some prepositions also have entirely different meanings with different cases: za + instrumental (behind) vs. za + accusative (in exchange for, or in a time period).
Understanding these patterns eliminates a major source of errors and gives you precise control over spatial and temporal meaning.
How It Works
na + locative (location) vs. na + accusative (direction)
| Meaning | Case | Example |
|---|---|---|
| on/at (location) | locative | Jestem na poczcie. (I'm at the post office.) |
| onto/to (direction) | accusative | Idę na pocztę. (I'm going to the post office.) |
w + locative (location) vs. w + accusative (direction/time)
| Meaning | Case | Example |
|---|---|---|
| in (location) | locative | Jestem w domu. (I'm at home.) |
| into (direction) | accusative | Wchodzę w las. (I'm entering the forest.) |
| on (day) | accusative | w poniedziałek (on Monday) |
za + various cases
| Meaning | Case | Example |
|---|---|---|
| behind (location) | instrumental | za domem (behind the house) |
| in (time period) | accusative | za godzinę (in an hour) |
| for (exchange) | accusative | za darmo (for free) |
Examples in Context
| Polish | English | Note |

| za godzinę (acc) | in an hour | Time |
| za domem (inst) | behind the house | Location |
| Kładę na stół. (acc) | I put on the table. | Direction |
| Leży na stole. (loc) | It lies on the table. | Location |
| Wchodzę do domu. | I enter the house. | Direction with do |
| Jestem w domu. | I'm at home. | Location |
| pod stołem (inst) | under the table (location) | Static |
| pod stół (acc) | under the table (direction) | Movement |
Common Mistakes
Using locative for direction
- Wrong: Idę na poczcie.
- Right: Idę na pocztę.
- Why: Direction requires accusative. Locative is only for static location.
Using the same case for za regardless of meaning
- Wrong: za godzinę (correct) but za domu (wrong for "behind the house")
- Right: za domem (instrumental for location behind)
- Why: Different meanings of za require different cases.
Forgetting the direction/location distinction
- Wrong: Kładę książkę na stole. (locative for a movement)
- Right: Kładę książkę na stół. (accusative for direction)
- Why: Placing something = movement/direction = accusative.
Usage Notes
The location/direction distinction with dual-case prepositions is strict in all registers. It is one of the most consistent rules in Polish and native speakers notice errors immediately. The same system applies in German (two-way prepositions) and Russian.
Practice Tips
- Create pairs: Jestem na poczcie / Idę na pocztę. Jestem w domu / Idę do domu.
- Describe putting objects somewhere (direction, acc.) vs. where they are (location, loc.).
- Practice za in all its meanings: za domem, za godzinę, za darmo, za dużo.
