Basic Prepositions in Polish

Overview

Prepositions in Polish always require a specific grammatical case on the noun that follows. At the A1 level, learning the most common prepositions with their required cases is essential for forming correct phrases. The key prepositions covered here are z + instrumental (with), bez + genitive (without), dla + genitive (for), o + locative (about), and od + genitive (from/since).

Unlike English prepositions, which are followed by the base form of a noun, Polish prepositions force the noun to change its ending. This means that learning prepositions and case endings must go hand in hand. Treating preposition-case pairs as vocabulary units is the most effective approach.

How It Works

Core prepositions and their cases

Preposition Case Meaning Example
z instrumental with z mlekiem (with milk)
z genitive from z Polski (from Poland)
bez genitive without bez cukru (without sugar)
dla genitive for dla ciebie (for you)
o locative about o pogodzie (about weather)
od genitive from/since od rana (since morning)
do genitive to/until do szkoły (to school)
przed instrumental before/in front of przed domem (in front of house)
po locative after po obiedzie (after lunch)
między instrumental between między nami (between us)

z as a dual-case preposition

  • z + instrumental = with: kawa z mlekiem (coffee with milk)
  • z + genitive = from: jestem z Polski (I'm from Poland)

Examples in Context

Polish English Note
z mlekiem with milk z + instrumental
bez cukru without sugar bez + genitive
dla ciebie for you dla + genitive
o pogodzie about the weather o + locative
od rana do wieczora from morning to evening od/do + genitive
przed szkołą in front of school przed + instrumental
po lekcji after the lesson po + locative
między nami between us między + instrumental
kawa bez mleka coffee without milk bez + genitive
list od mamy letter from mom od + genitive

Common Mistakes

Using nominative after prepositions

  • Wrong: bez cukier
  • Right: bez cukru
  • Why: Bez requires genitive. The noun must change its ending.

Confusing z + instrumental and z + genitive

  • Wrong: Jestem z Polską. (with Poland?)
  • Right: Jestem z Polski. (from Poland)
  • Why: "From" = z + genitive. "With" = z + instrumental.

Using wrong case after o

  • Wrong: o pogoda
  • Right: o pogodzie
  • Why: O (about) requires the locative case.

Usage Notes

These prepositions are used identically in all registers. They are among the most frequent words in Polish and mastering them early provides enormous communicative benefit. Each preposition-case pair should be learned as a fixed unit.

Practice Tips

  1. Create flashcards with preposition + case + example phrase: z + inst. = z mlekiem, bez + gen. = bez cukru.
  2. Describe your coffee order using prepositions: kawa z mlekiem, bez cukru, dla mnie.
  3. Practice z in both meanings: list five "with" phrases and five "from" phrases.
