Basic Declension Patterns in Polish
Podstawowa Deklinacja
Overview
Declension refers to how nouns change their endings across the seven cases. At the A1 level, learning the three core declension types -- masculine hard stems, feminine -a stems, and neuter -o/-e stems -- provides a framework for understanding how most Polish nouns behave. These patterns cover the vast majority of nouns you will encounter as a beginner.
Each gender has a characteristic set of endings that map consistently to the seven cases. While there are exceptions and subgroups, the hard-stem patterns form the foundation. Once you internalize these three paradigms, you can predict the case form of most nouns you encounter, and you have a framework for understanding the less common soft-stem and irregular patterns later.
Polish declension may seem daunting with its many forms, but the system is highly regular. Learning one example noun per gender thoroughly is more effective than trying to memorize abstract ending tables.
How It Works
Masculine hard declension: pan (sir/Mr.)
| Case | Singular | Plural |
|---|---|---|
| Nominative | pan | panowie |
| Genitive | pana | panów |
| Dative | panu | panom |
| Accusative | pana | panów |
| Instrumental | panem | panami |
| Locative | panu | panach |
| Vocative | panie | panowie |
Feminine -a declension: kobieta (woman)
| Case | Singular | Plural |
|---|---|---|
| Nominative | kobieta | kobiety |
| Genitive | kobiety | kobiet |
| Dative | kobiecie | kobietom |
| Accusative | kobietę | kobiety |
| Instrumental | kobietą | kobietami |
| Locative | kobiecie | kobietach |
| Vocative | kobieto | kobiety |
Neuter -o declension: miasto (city)
| Case | Singular | Plural |
|---|---|---|
| Nominative | miasto | miasta |
| Genitive | miasta | miast |
| Dative | miastu | miastom |
| Accusative | miasto | miasta |
| Instrumental | miastem | miastami |
| Locative | mieście | miastach |
| Vocative | miasto | miasta |
Examples in Context

| miasto, miasta, miastu, miasto | city (nom, gen, dat, acc) | Neuter paradigm |
| dom, domu, domowi, dom | house (nom, gen, dat, acc) | Masc. inanimate (acc=nom) |
| Widzę kobietę. | I see the woman. | Feminine accusative |
| Idę do miasta. | I'm going to the city. | Neuter genitive |
| z panem | with the gentleman | Masculine instrumental |
| w mieście | in the city | Neuter locative |
| Nie ma kobiety. | The woman isn't here. | Feminine genitive |
| Daję panu klucz. | I give the gentleman a key. | Masculine dative |
Common Mistakes
Applying one gender's endings to another
- Wrong: z kobietem (using masculine -em for feminine)
- Right: z kobietą
- Why: Each gender has its own set of endings. Feminine instrumental uses -ą, not -em.
Forgetting consonant changes in locative
- Wrong: w miasto
- Right: w mieście
- Why: The locative often triggers consonant changes (t→ć in this case). These must be learned with each noun.
Using the wrong genitive ending for masculines
- Wrong: domu is correct, but applying -u to all masculines
- Right: Masculine genitive is -a (animate/personal) or -u (inanimate, abstract). Pana but domu.
- Why: The genitive has two patterns for masculine nouns. Check each noun individually.
Usage Notes
These declension patterns are universal across all registers and regions. There are no simplified or spoken alternatives. The patterns presented here cover "hard" stems; soft stems (covered separately) have minor variations but follow the same structural logic.
Practice Tips
- Choose one example noun per gender (pan, kobieta, miasto) and decline it through all seven cases from memory. Repeat daily until automatic.
- When you learn a new noun, immediately try to produce its genitive and accusative forms. These are the most commonly needed cases after nominative.
- Use case tables as reference while reading Polish texts. Identify the case of each noun you encounter and check it against the pattern.
