Adjective Agreement in Polish
Zgodność Przymiotników
Overview
In Polish, adjectives must agree with the noun they modify in three dimensions: gender, number, and case. This means a single adjective like duży (big) has many different forms depending on the noun it describes. At the A1 level, learning at least the nominative forms for all genders is essential for basic description.
Polish adjectives always precede or follow the noun and change their ending to match it. The masculine personal plural form is particularly distinctive, as it triggers a separate set of endings not shared by any other gender-number combination. This mirrors the broader masculine personal distinction that runs through Polish grammar.
Mastering adjective agreement takes time, but it follows predictable patterns. Once you learn the endings for one adjective, you can apply them to almost any other adjective.
How It Works
Nominative forms
| Form | Ending | Example with duży |
|---|---|---|
| Masculine singular | -y / -i | duży dom |
| Feminine singular | -a | duża kobieta |
| Neuter singular | -e | duże dziecko |
| Masculine personal plural | -i (+ consonant change) | duzi mężczyźni |
| Non-masculine personal plural | -e | duże domy/kobiety/dzieci |
Hard vs. soft adjective stems
- Hard stem (most adjectives): duży, mały, stary, nowy, ładny
- Soft stem (ending in -i in masc.): tani, ostatni, głupi

Common Mistakes
Using masculine form for all genders
- Wrong: duży kobieta
- Right: duża kobieta
- Why: The adjective must match the feminine noun. Using -y with a feminine noun is immediately noticeable as an error.
Forgetting consonant change in masculine personal plural
- Wrong: duży mężczyźni
- Right: duzi mężczyźni
- Why: Masculine personal plural triggers consonant alternation: ż→z, before adding -i.
Not declining adjectives with the noun
- Wrong: w duży dom
- Right: w dużym domu
- Why: Both the adjective and noun must be in the same case. Here, w requires locative.
Usage Notes
Adjective agreement is obligatory in all registers. There is no simplified colloquial form. In predicate position (Dom jest duży), the adjective still agrees in gender and number with the subject.
Practice Tips
- Pick five common adjectives (duży, mały, nowy, stary, dobry) and practice them with a masculine, feminine, and neuter noun each. This builds the three-gender reflex.
- When you learn a new noun, immediately describe it with an adjective to practice agreement: nowy telefon, nowa torba, nowe okno.
- Focus on nominative forms first, then gradually add accusative and locative as you learn those cases.
