Advanced Conjunctions in Norwegian
Avanserte Konjunksjoner
Overview
Advanced Conjunctions (Avanserte Konjunksjoner) is a B1-level grammar concept in Norwegian covering subordinating conjunctions that express contrast, condition, and alternatives. The key conjunctions at this level are selv om (although/even though), med mindre (unless), enten...eller (either...or), and verken...eller (neither...nor).
These conjunctions allow you to construct more nuanced and complex arguments, express concessions, set conditions, and present alternatives. They move your Norwegian well beyond simple cause-and-effect relationships and enable the kind of sophisticated reasoning expected at the B1 level and beyond.
Understanding these conjunctions also reinforces Norwegian word order rules, since most of them introduce subordinate clauses with the corresponding word order. The correlative pairs (enten...eller, verken...eller) present additional structural challenges as they coordinate two parallel elements.
How It Works
Selv om (although / even though)
Selv om introduces a concessive clause -- something that is true but does not prevent the main clause from being true:
| Norwegian | English |
|---|---|
| Selv om det regnet, gikk vi ut. | Although it rained, we went out. |
| Selv om han er ung, er han klok. | Even though he's young, he's wise. |
| Jeg liker henne, selv om vi er uenige. | I like her, even though we disagree. |
Word order: Selv om introduces a subordinate clause (adverbials before verb). When the selv om-clause comes first, the main clause has V2 inversion.
Med mindre (unless)
Med mindre introduces a negative condition:
| Norwegian | English |
|---|---|
| Med mindre du betaler, kan du ikke gå. | Unless you pay, you can't leave. |
| Vi drar, med mindre det regner. | We'll go, unless it rains. |
| Med mindre noe endrer seg, blir vi her. | Unless something changes, we'll stay here. |
Enten...eller (either...or)
This correlative conjunction presents two alternatives:
| Norwegian | English |
|---|---|
| Enten kommer du, eller du blir hjemme. | Either you come, or you stay home. |
| Du kan enten ringe eller sende melding. | You can either call or send a message. |
| Enten vi vil eller ikke, må vi gjøre det. | Whether we want to or not, we must do it. |
When connecting clauses, each clause has its own word order. When connecting words or phrases within a clause, they remain parallel.
Verken...eller (neither...nor)
This correlative conjunction negates both alternatives:
| Norwegian | English |
|---|---|
| Verken han eller hun var der. | Neither he nor she was there. |
| Jeg drikker verken kaffe eller te. | I drink neither coffee nor tea. |
| Verken regnet eller kulden stoppet dem. | Neither the rain nor the cold stopped them. |
Note: When verken...eller is the subject, the verb agrees with the element closest to it (or defaults to plural).
Additional advanced conjunctions
| Conjunction | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| til tross for at | despite (the fact that) | Til tross for at hun var syk, kom hun. |
| uansett om | regardless of whether | Uansett om det regner, drar vi. |
| så lenge | as long as | Så lenge du er her, er det greit. |
| i stedet for å | instead of | I stedet for å klage, gjør noe. |

Common Mistakes
Confusing selv om with selv + past tense
- Wrong: Selv det regnet, gikk vi ut.
- Right: Selv om det regnet, gikk vi ut.
- Why: Selv om is a fixed two-word conjunction meaning "although." Dropping om changes the meaning entirely.
Adding ikke with med mindre
- Wrong: Med mindre du ikke betaler...
- Right: Med mindre du betaler...
- Why: Med mindre already carries negative meaning ("unless"). Adding ikke creates a double negative that reverses the intended meaning.
Breaking parallelism with enten...eller and verken...eller
- Wrong: Enten kan du ringe eller at du sender melding.
- Right: Enten kan du ringe eller sende melding.
- Why: The elements connected by correlative conjunctions must be grammatically parallel -- both infinitives, both nouns, both clauses with matching structure.
Wrong word order after selv om
- Wrong: Selv om det regnet, vi gikk ut.
- Right: Selv om det regnet, gikk vi ut.
- Why: When a subordinate clause (selv om-clause) precedes the main clause, the main clause requires V2 word order with the verb before the subject.
Usage Notes
Selv om is the most frequently used of these conjunctions and appears in all registers of Bokmål. It is equally natural in spoken and written Norwegian.
Med mindre is somewhat more formal and is used more often in writing. In casual speech, Norwegians might rephrase with hvis ikke (if not): Hvis du ikke betaler, kan du ikke gå.
Enten...eller and verken...eller are used across all registers. Verken...eller is the standard way to express "neither...nor" -- there is no informal alternative.
The conjunction til tross for at (despite the fact that) is more formal than selv om but carries a similar concessive meaning.
Practice Tips
- Build concession pairs. Write sentences where two facts seem contradictory: Selv om [unexpected condition], [surprising result]. For example: Selv om hun aldri øver, spiller hun godt piano.
- Practice correlative conjunctions with parallel structure. Write sentences using enten...eller and verken...eller with nouns, adjectives, verbs, and full clauses, keeping the elements parallel.
- Replace informal with formal. Take sentences using hvis ikke and rephrase them with med mindre: Hvis du ikke kommer, spiser vi uten deg becomes Med mindre du kommer, spiser vi uten deg.
