Frequency Adverbs in Dutch
Frequency adverbs tell you how often something happens, and they are essential for describing routines, habits, and general tendencies. In Dutch, these adverbs work much like their English counterparts, but their placement in a sentence follows Dutch word-order rules, which differ from English.
Learning a handful of frequency adverbs transforms your ability to talk about daily life. Instead of just saying "I cycle to work," you can say "I always cycle to work" or "I sometimes take the bus." These small words add nuance and personality to your sentences.
The most common frequency adverbs range from altijd (always) at one extreme to nooit (never) at the other, with several options in between.
Formation / How It Works
The Frequency Scale
From most frequent to least frequent:
| Dutch | English | Approximate frequency |
|---|---|---|
| altijd | always | 100% |
| meestal | usually | ~85% |
| vaak | often | ~70% |
| regelmatig | regularly | ~60% |
| af en toe | now and then | ~40% |
| soms | sometimes | ~30% |
| zelden | seldom / rarely | ~10% |
| bijna nooit | almost never | ~5% |
| nooit | never | 0% |
Position in the Sentence
In a standard Dutch sentence, frequency adverbs typically come after the conjugated verb and after the subject (if the subject follows the verb due to inversion):
| Position | Example |
|---|---|
| After verb (standard) | Ik fiets vaak naar het werk. |
| After subject in inversion | Vaak fiets ik naar het werk. |
| With modal verb | Ik kan soms niet slapen. |
When a frequency adverb is placed in position 1 (front of the sentence), it triggers inversion — the subject and verb swap:
| Standard order | Fronted adverb (with inversion) |
|---|---|
| Ik ga vaak naar de markt. | Vaak ga ik naar de markt. |
| Wij eten soms buiten. | Soms eten wij buiten. |
Nooit and Negation
Nooit (never) replaces niet (not) — you do not combine them:
| Wrong | Right |
|---|---|
| Ik drink niet nooit koffie. | Ik drink nooit koffie. |
Examples in Context
| Dutch | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Ik eet altijd om zes uur. | I always eat at six o'clock. | After verb |
| Zij gaat vaak naar de bioscoop. | She often goes to the cinema. | After verb |
| Soms regent het in de zomer. | Sometimes it rains in summer. | Fronted, with inversion |
| We gaan meestal met de auto. | We usually go by car. | After verb |
| Hij komt zelden te laat. | He is seldom late. | Low frequency |
| Af en toe kook ik Indonesisch. | Now and then I cook Indonesian. | Multi-word adverb, fronted |
| Ik sport regelmatig. | I exercise regularly. | End of sentence |
| Zij drinkt nooit alcohol. | She never drinks alcohol. | Replaces niet |
| Ga je vaak uit eten? | Do you often eat out? | In questions |
| We fietsen bijna nooit als het regent. | We almost never cycle when it rains. | Two-word combination |
Common Mistakes
| Wrong | Right | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Ik altijd eet om zes uur. | Ik eet altijd om zes uur. | Adverb goes after the conjugated verb, not before |
| Ik drink niet nooit koffie. | Ik drink nooit koffie. | Nooit already includes the negation |
| Soms ik ga naar het park. | Soms ga ik naar het park. | Fronted adverb triggers inversion |
| Ik ga naar de markt vaak. | Ik ga vaak naar de markt. | Frequency adverb goes before place expressions |
Practice Tips
- Describe your weekly routine. Write five sentences about your week using a different frequency adverb each time. For example: Ik drink altijd koffie bij het ontbijt. Soms ga ik naar de sportschool.
- Practice inversion. Take each sentence you wrote and move the adverb to the front. Check that you correctly swap the subject and verb.
- Listen for frequency. When watching Dutch media, note which frequency adverbs speakers use. You will hear vaak, soms, and altijd constantly.
