Demonstratives in Dutch

Demonstrative pronouns are the words for "this," "that," "these," and "those." In Dutch, you choose between two pairs: deze/dit (this/these) and die/dat (that/those). The choice depends on whether the noun is a de-word or a het-word — the same distinction that governs so much of Dutch grammar.

Demonstratives are among the most frequently used words in any language. You need them to point things out (Dit is mijn huis), make choices (Ik wil die), refer back to something just mentioned (Dat klopt), and much more. Learning the four forms and when to use each one is a small investment with a big payoff.

The good news: there are only four forms to learn, and the pattern is consistent. Once you know whether a noun is a de-word or a het-word, you automatically know which demonstrative to use.

Formation / How It Works

The Four Demonstratives

De-words & Plurals Het-words (singular)
Near (this/these) deze dit
Far (that/those) die dat

Before a Noun (Adjective Use)

Noun type This/these That/those Example
De-word deze man die man this man / that man
Het-word dit boek dat boek this book / that book
Plural (always de) deze boeken die boeken these books / those books

Standing Alone (Pronoun Use)

Demonstratives can also stand alone as pronouns:

Dutch English Context
Dit is mijn huis. This is my house. Referring to het-word
Dat is mooi. That is beautiful. General reference
Deze is van mij. This one is mine. Referring to de-word
Die wil ik. I want that one. Referring to de-word

Dat as a General Pronoun

Dat is frequently used as a general-purpose pronoun, similar to English "that," regardless of the gender of what it refers to:

  • Dat klopt. — That is correct.
  • Dat weet ik niet. — I do not know that.
  • Dat is een goed idee. — That is a good idea.

Examples in Context

Common Mistakes

Wrong Right Why
Deze boek is goed. Dit boek is goed. Boek is a het-word → use dit.
Dit auto is nieuw. Deze auto is nieuw. Auto is a de-word → use deze.
Dit schoenen zijn mooi. Deze schoenen zijn mooi. Plurals always take deze or die.
Die is mijn huis. (pointing at a house) Dat is mijn huis. Huis is a het-word → use dat.
Dat mensen zijn aardig. Die mensen zijn aardig. Mensen is plural → use die.

Practice Tips

  1. Point and name. Walk around your home pointing at objects: Dit is een stoel (het-word? no — de stoel → deze stoel!). Dit is een boek (het boek → dit boek). Correcting yourself builds the reflex.

  2. This or that game. With a partner or alone, practice contrasting near and far: Deze koffie is warm. Die koffie is koud. Dit boek is nieuw. Dat boek is oud. The contrast reinforces the near/far distinction.

  3. Link to de/het. Every time you learn a new noun, immediately practice its demonstrative: het museum → dit museum / dat museum. de school → deze school / die school. This integrates demonstratives with your vocabulary learning.
