Object Particle 을/를 in Korean

목적격 조사 을/를

Overview

The object particles 을 and 를 mark the direct object of a sentence — the thing that receives the action of the verb. This is a CEFR A1 concept essential for constructing complete Korean sentences. Like other particles, the choice is phonetic: 을 follows consonant-ending nouns, 를 follows vowel-ending nouns.

In Korean's SOV word order, the object typically comes between the subject and the verb. The object particle makes it unambiguous which noun is the object, even when word order varies. This is especially important because Korean allows flexible word order as long as the verb remains at the end.

While 을/를 is sometimes dropped in casual conversation, using it correctly is important for clear communication and proper grammar, particularly in writing and formal contexts.

How It Works

Noun ending Particle Example
Consonant (rice + object)
Vowel 커피 (coffee + object)

Pattern: Subject + Object을/를 + Verb

Korean Breakdown English
밥을 먹어요. rice-OBJ eat (I) eat rice.
영화를 봐요. movie-OBJ watch (I) watch a movie.
책을 읽어요. book-OBJ read (I) read a book.

Common Mistakes

Using the wrong particle based on final sound

  • Wrong: 커피 마셔요.
  • Right: 커피 마셔요.
  • Why: 커피 ends in a vowel (ㅣ), so it takes 를. This is a consistent phonetic rule.

Confusing object particle with subject particle

  • Wrong: 읽어요. (meaning "I read a book")
  • Right: 읽어요.
  • Why: 이/가 marks the subject (doer), 을/를 marks the object (receiver of action). 책이 marks "the book" as doing something.

Dropping 을/를 in formal contexts

  • Wrong: Omitting the particle in writing or formal speech
  • Right: Including 을/를 in all non-casual contexts
  • Why: While dropping particles is common in casual speech, formal Korean expects them for grammatical precision.

Usage Notes

The object particle 을/를 is one of the most commonly dropped particles in casual spoken Korean. Among friends, 밥 먹어 (without 을) is perfectly natural. However, when clarity is needed or in formal/written contexts, the particle should be retained. Some verbs that take 을/를 in Korean correspond to intransitive constructions in English, such as 운동을 하다 (do exercise) and 공부를 하다 (do study).

Practice Tips

  • Build a daily routine description using object particles: 아침을 먹어요, 커피를 마셔요, 뉴스를 봐요. This creates a natural pattern.
  • Practice with question-answer pairs: 뭐를 먹어요? — 밥을 먹어요. This reinforces both the question word and the particle.
  • When reading Korean, highlight every 을/를 and identify the verb it pairs with. This strengthens your sense of what "receives" the action.
