Advanced Particles in Korean
고급 조사
Overview
Beyond basic particles, Korean has nuanced particles at the CEFR B2 level that add subtle meaning: -마저 (even, last remaining), -조차 (even, surprisingly), -나마 (at least), -대로 (as/according to), and -만큼 (as much as). These particles elevate Korean expression beyond basic communication to nuanced, native-like speech.
How It Works
| Particle | Meaning | Nuance |
|---|---|---|
| -마저 | even (the last one) | disappointment, last hope gone |
| -조차 | even (unexpectedly) | emphasis on unexpectedness |
| -나마 | at least | settling for less |
| -대로 | as, according to | following something |
| -만큼 | as much as | comparison, extent |

Common Mistakes
Confusing 마저 and 조차
- Wrong: Using them interchangeably
- Right: 마저 = even the last one (sequential depletion); 조차 = even X (surprising minimum)
- Why: 친구마저 (even my friend, the last person I expected to leave) vs. 이름조차 (don't even know something as basic as a name).
Usage Notes
These particles are the mark of intermediate-to-advanced Korean. They appear frequently in writing, drama dialogue, and emotional expression. -대로 is particularly versatile: 말한 대로 (as said), 원래대로 (as originally), 마음대로 (as one wishes). -만큼 is essential for comparisons and is used daily.
Korean also uses -밖에 (nothing but/only) with negative verbs: 물밖에 없어요 (there's nothing but water). While not as advanced as the particles listed above, it bridges basic particles to the nuanced ones. These particles frequently appear in literature, formal speeches, and emotional expression.
In TOPIK II reading sections, these particles appear regularly and understanding their precise nuances is tested. They also distinguish native-like speech from textbook Korean, making them valuable for naturalness.
Practice Tips
- Create emotional sentences with 마저 and 조차: 시간마저 없어요. 이해조차 못 해요.
- Practice -대로 with instructions: 선생님이 말한 대로 했어요.
- Use -만큼 for comparisons: 형만큼 키가 커요.
