Bello & Buono
Bello e Buono
Bello & Buono in Italian
Overview
Bello (beautiful/nice) and buono (good) are two of the most common adjectives in Italian — and two of the trickiest at the A1 level. Unlike regular adjectives that simply change their ending for gender and number, bello and buono take special shortened forms when they appear before a noun.
These special forms are not random. Bello follows the same pattern as the definite article (il, lo, la, i, gli, le), while buono follows the pattern of the indefinite article (un, uno, una, un'). Once you see this connection, the forms become much easier to remember.
When bello and buono come after a noun or the verb "essere," they behave like regular adjectives with the standard four endings (-o, -a, -i, -e).
How It Works
Bello — follows the definite article
Bello mirrors the definite article. Whatever article a noun takes, bello takes a matching form:
| Definite article | Bello form | Used before | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| il | bel | most masculine singular nouns | un bel ragazzo |
| lo | bello | s+consonant, z, gn, ps, x | un bello specchio |
| l' | bell' | vowel (masc. singular) | un bell'uomo |
| la | bella | feminine singular consonant | una bella casa |
| l' | bell' | vowel (fem. singular) | una bell'idea |
| i | bei | most masculine plural nouns | dei bei ragazzi |
| gli | begli | s+consonant, z, vowel, gn | dei begli occhi |
| le | belle | all feminine plural nouns | delle belle case |
Buono — follows the indefinite article
Buono mirrors the indefinite article (un/uno/una/un'):
| Indefinite article | Buono form | Used before | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| un | buon | most masculine singular nouns | un buon amico |
| uno | buono | s+consonant, z, gn, ps, x | un buono stipendio |
| una | buona | feminine singular consonant | una buona idea |
| un' | buon' | vowel (fem. singular) | una buon'amica |
Since the indefinite article only exists in singular, the plural forms of buono are regular: buoni (masculine) and buone (feminine).
After the noun or with "essere"
When bello or buono comes after the noun or follows the verb "essere," use the regular four forms:
| Masculine | Feminine | |
|---|---|---|
| Singular | bello / buono | bella / buona |
| Plural | belli / buoni | belle / buone |
- Quel ragazzo è bello. (That boy is handsome.)
- La torta è buona. (The cake is good.)

Common Mistakes
Using the full form before a noun
- Wrong: un bello giardino
- Right: un bel giardino
- Why: Before a noun that takes "il" (il giardino), bello shortens to "bel." Save "bello" for nouns that take "lo."
Forgetting the apostrophe before a vowel
- Wrong: un bel uomo
- Right: un bell'uomo
- Why: Before a masculine vowel, bello becomes "bell'" with an apostrophe, just as the article becomes "l'."
Using "buoni/buone" before a singular noun
- Wrong: una buoni sera
- Right: una buona sera
- Why: Match the form to the gender and number of the noun. "Sera" is feminine singular, so use "buona."
Applying special forms after the noun
- Wrong: Il ragazzo è bel.
- Right: Il ragazzo è bello.
- Why: The special short forms only apply before a noun. After the noun or with "essere," use the regular form.
Practice Tips
- Use the article trick: When unsure of the bello form, think of which definite article the noun takes — bello follows the same pattern. If a noun uses "gli" (gli occhi), bello becomes "begli" (begli occhi).
- Drill with greetings: Everyday phrases like "Buongiorno" (buon + giorno), "Buona sera," and "Buona notte" are natural practice for the buono forms — you already use them without realizing it.
- Create pairs: Practice each noun with bello/buono both before and after: "un bel libro / il libro è bello," "un buon caffè / il caffè è buono." This helps internalize when to use the short vs. regular forms.
