Basic Conjunctions in Indonesian

Konjungsi Dasar

Overview

Conjunctions connect words, phrases, and clauses. Indonesian conjunctions are straightforward and work much like their English equivalents. The most common ones — dan (and), atau (or), tetapi/tapi (but), karena (because), jadi (so), and lalu (then) — will cover most of your early communication needs.

These conjunctions do not change form, and the word order around them is intuitive. Learning to use them will allow you to build longer, more natural sentences instead of relying on short, choppy phrases.

How It Works

Coordinating Conjunctions

Indonesian English Example
dan and Saya dan kamu. (Me and you.)
atau or Kopi atau teh? (Coffee or tea?)
tetapi / tapi but Mau pergi tapi sibuk. (Want to go but busy.)

Causal and Sequential

Indonesian English Example
karena because Karena hujan, saya di rumah. (Because of rain, I'm at home.)
jadi so/therefore Capek jadi istirahat. (Tired so resting.)
lalu then Makan lalu tidur. (Eat then sleep.)
kemudian then/next Pergi kemudian pulang. (Go then come home.)

Usage Patterns

Pattern Example
A dan B nasi dan sayur (rice and vegetables)
A atau B pergi atau tinggal (go or stay)
A tapi B murah tapi bagus (cheap but good)
karena A, B Karena hujan, batal. (Because of rain, cancelled.)
A jadi B Mahal jadi tidak beli. (Expensive so didn't buy.)

Common Mistakes

Using tetapi and tapi inconsistently

  • Wrong: Using tetapi in casual conversation
  • Right: Use tapi in speech, tetapi in formal writing
  • Why: Tapi is the casual form; tetapi is formal. Both are correct, but register matters.

Placing karena incorrectly

  • Wrong: Saya di rumah, karena. (ending with karena)
  • Right: Saya di rumah karena hujan. or Karena hujan, saya di rumah.
  • Why: Karena needs a following clause — it introduces the reason.

Overusing dan to connect long lists

  • Wrong: Saya beli nasi dan sayur dan daging dan buah.
  • Right: Saya beli nasi, sayur, daging, dan buah.
  • Why: Like English, use commas in lists with dan before the final item.

Practice Tips

  1. Practice combining short sentences using conjunctions: Saya suka kopi. Dia suka teh. becomes Saya suka kopi dan dia suka teh.
  2. Tell a simple story using lalu/kemudian: Saya bangun, lalu mandi, lalu makan, lalu pergi kerja.
