Potential Mood (-hat/-het) in Hungarian

Overview

The potential mood in Hungarian is formed by inserting -hat (back vowel) or -het (front vowel) between the verb stem and the personal endings. It expresses ability, permission, or possibility — equivalent to English "can" or "may." What makes it powerful is that -hat/-het combines freely with all tenses, moods, and both conjugation types, creating a rich system of potential expressions.

At the CEFR C1 level, learners should master not just the basic present-tense potential but also combinations like the past potential (megtehettem — I was able to do it), the conditional potential (mehetne — he/she could go), and the past conditional potential (mehettem volna — I could have gone). These compound forms express nuanced shades of possibility.

Common Mistakes

Wrong vowel harmony

• Wrong: megy + -hat = megyhat
• Right: megy → mehet

Confusing potential with imperative

• Wrong: Using -hat/-het to give commands
• Right: -hat/-het expresses ability/permission, not commands

Segíthetek? (Can I help?) is one of the most common polite offers in Hungarian. The potential mood softens statements and requests: Kaphatnék egy kávét? (Could I get a coffee?) is gentler than Kérnék egy kávét (I'd like a coffee).

The negative potential (nem mehetek — I can't go) is distinct from prohibition (nem szabad mennem — I'm not allowed to go).
