Potential Mood (-hat/-het) in Hungarian

Ható Mód (-hat/-het)

This article is part of the Hungarian grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

Overview

The potential mood in Hungarian is formed by inserting -hat (back vowel) or -het (front vowel) between the verb stem and the personal endings. It expresses ability, permission, or possibility — equivalent to English "can" or "may." What makes it powerful is that -hat/-het combines freely with all tenses, moods, and both conjugation types, creating a rich system of potential expressions.

At the CEFR C1 level, learners should master not just the basic present-tense potential but also combinations like the past potential (megtehettem — I was able to do it), the conditional potential (mehetne — he/she could go), and the past conditional potential (mehettem volna — I could have gone). These compound forms express nuanced shades of possibility.

The -hat/-het suffix is one of the most productive and frequently used suffixes in Hungarian, appearing in everyday conversation at all registers.

How It Works

Basic Potential Formation

Stem + -hat/-het + personal endings

Person Indefinite (megy→mehet) Definite (lát→láthat)
én mehetek láthatom
te mehetsz láthatod
ő mehet láthatja
mi mehetünk láthatjuk
ti mehettek láthatjátok
ők mehetnek láthatják

Potential + Past Tense

Hungarian English
Mehettem. I was able to go.
Láthattam. I was able to see (it).
Nem mehettem. I couldn't go.

Potential + Conditional

Hungarian English
Mehetnék. I could go (hypothetical).
Láthattam volna. I could have seen (it).
Láthatnád. You could see it.

Potential + Past + Conditional (Volna)

Hungarian English
Mehettem volna. I could have gone.
Megtehettem volna. I could have done it.
Nem mehettem volna. I couldn't have gone.

Common Mistakes

Wrong vowel harmony

  • Wrong: megy + -hat = megyhat
  • Right: megy → mehet
  • Why: Megy has front vowels, requiring -het. Also note the stem change: megy → meh-.

Confusing potential with imperative

  • Wrong: Using -hat/-het to give commands
  • Right: -hat/-het expresses ability/permission, not commands
  • Why: "You can go" (mehet) is different from "Go!" (menj). The potential expresses possibility, not instruction.

Overcomplicating compound forms

  • Wrong: Guessing at multi-layered forms
  • Right: Build systematically: stem + -hat/-het + tense + mood + person
  • Why: The layers stack predictably: lát-hat-t-am volna (see-POT-PAST-1sg COND).

Usage Notes

Segíthetek? (Can I help?) is one of the most common polite offers in Hungarian. The potential mood softens statements and requests: Kaphatnék egy kávét? (Could I get a coffee?) is gentler than Kérnék egy kávét (I'd like a coffee).

The negative potential (nem mehetek — I can't go) is distinct from prohibition (nem szabad mennem — I'm not allowed to go).

Practice Tips

  • Conjugate five verbs with -hat/-het through all persons in present, then try past and conditional.
  • Practice stacking: present potential → past potential → conditional potential → past conditional potential.
  • Use potential forms for polite requests in everyday situations.
