Past Tense of 'Lenni' in Hungarian

A 'Lenni' Múlt Ideje

Overview

The past tense forms of lenni (to be) — voltam, voltál, volt, voltunk, voltatok, voltak — are used for past states, locations, and descriptions. Unlike the present tense where third-person van drops in predicates, the past tense volt/voltak is always present. At the CEFR A2 level, these forms are essential for talking about past experiences, describing how things were, and narrating events.

The past forms are completely regular within their own paradigm (all built on the volt- stem) and do not exhibit the zero-copula behavior of the present tense. This makes them simpler to use but means learners must remember to include volt where they would drop van in the present.

Common Mistakes

Dropping volt in past predicates

  • Wrong: Péter tanár. (meaning "Péter was a teacher")
  • Right: Péter tanár volt.
  • Why: The zero-copula rule only applies to present tense. Past tense always requires volt/voltak.

Using van forms for past

  • Wrong: Tegnap ott van.
  • Right: Tegnap ott volt.
  • Why: Past events require past tense forms of lenni.

Wrong person form

  • Wrong: Én volt beteg. (using 3rd person for 1st)
  • Right: Én voltam beteg. (1st person)
  • Why: Each person has its own form. The pronoun is optional but the ending must match.

Usage Notes

Volt is also used as the past of existential constructions: Volt idő. (There was time.) Voltak emberek. (There were people.) The negative past existential uses nem volt/nem voltak: Nem volt idő. (There was no time.)

The phrase Hogy voltál? (How were you? / How have you been?) is a common greeting question referring to recent experience.

Practice Tips

  • Describe yesterday using volt/voltam: Hol voltál? Az iskolában voltam. Jó volt.
  • Practice all six persons: Voltam, voltál, volt, voltunk, voltatok, voltak.
  • Compare present and past pairs: Szép (van).Szép volt. / Otthon van.Otthon volt.
