Essive-Formal Case (-ként) in Hungarian

Essivus-Formalis (-ként)

Overview

The essive-formal case, formed with the suffix -ként, expresses "as" or "in the capacity/role of." It describes the function, role, or identity in which someone or something acts. This case has no vowel harmony variants — like -ért, it is always simply -ként.

At the CEFR B2 level, this case adds precision to how learners describe roles, professions, and capacities. While less frequent than core cases like the accusative or dative, -ként appears regularly in professional, academic, and narrative contexts.

The essive-formal is particularly useful for describing what role someone plays in a situation, without implying permanent identity or transformation.

How It Works

Formation

Simply add -ként to any noun:

Noun With -ként English
tanár tanárként as a teacher
barát barátként as a friend
példa példaként as an example
diák diákként as a student
turista turistaként as a tourist

Uses

Function Example English
Professional role Tanárként dolgozom. I work as a teacher.
Capacity Barátként mondom. I say this as a friend.
Example Példaként említem. I mention it as an example.
Temporary role Turistaként voltam ott. I was there as a tourist.

-ként vs -nak/-nek

Both can sometimes translate as "as," but they differ:

Construction Meaning Example
-ként in the role of Tanárként dolgozom. (I work as a teacher.)
-nak/-nek + verb considered as Tanárnak tartom. (I consider him a teacher.)

Common Mistakes

Adding vowel harmony variants

  • Wrong: Looking for -kent or -ként variants
  • Right: Always just -ként
  • Why: Like -ért, the suffix -ként has no vowel harmony alternation.

Confusing -ként with translative -vá/-vé

  • Wrong: Tanárrá dolgozom. (I work becoming a teacher?)
  • Right: Tanárként dolgozom. (I work as a teacher.)
  • Why: -vá/-vé expresses transformation (becoming something); -ként expresses current role without change.

Overusing -ként where a simple noun suffices

  • Wrong: Tanárként vagyok. (I am as a teacher.)
  • Right: Tanár vagyok. (I am a teacher.)
  • Why: For stating identity, use the nominative. -ként implies a role or capacity, not basic identity.

Usage Notes

The essive-formal is common in formal, academic, and legal texts: bizonyítékként szolgál (serves as evidence), példaként említve (mentioned as an example). In casual speech, it appears less frequently but is understood universally.

The adverb mindenként does not exist. "As everything" would be rephrased differently.

Practice Tips

  • Describe your various roles: Tanárként dolgozom. Barátként segítek. Turistaként utazom.
  • Practice with professional contexts: Orvosként, mérnökként, ügyvédként...
  • Use -ként in formal writing exercises to build register awareness.
