Basic Adverbs in Hungarian

Alapvető Határozószók

Overview

Adverbs in Hungarian modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs, just as in English. At the CEFR A1 level, learners need a core set of adverbs for place, time, and manner that enable basic communication about daily life. Hungarian adverbs are generally straightforward — many are standalone words that do not change form.

One helpful feature of Hungarian is that many adverbs are formed from adjectives by adding the suffix -n/-an/-en/-on (or -ul/-ül for manner), making them predictable once you know the adjective. However, the most common everyday adverbs are standalone words that must simply be memorized.

Adverbs typically appear near the verb, often before it, but Hungarian's flexible word order means they can move for emphasis.

Common Mistakes

Wrong adverb formation

  • Wrong: gyorsul (quickly)
  • Right: gyorsan
  • Why: The -ul/-ül suffix is used only for certain irregular adverbs (jól, rosszul, magyarul). Most regular adverbs use -an/-en.

Confusing adverb and adjective

  • Wrong: Gyors beszél. (He speaks fast.)
  • Right: Gyorsan beszél.
  • Why: Before a verb, use the adverb form (-an/-en), not the bare adjective.

Misplacing time adverbs

  • Wrong: Placing time adverbs randomly
  • Right: Time adverbs typically go before the verb or at the start of the sentence: Holnap megyek. or Megyek holnap.
  • Why: While word order is flexible, time adverbs sound most natural near the beginning of the clause.

Usage Notes

The adverb suffix -ul/-ül is specifically used for language names acting as adverbs: magyarul (in Hungarian), angolul (in English), németül (in German). This is a distinct and productive pattern.

Szépen kérem (I ask nicely) is a very common polite expression, functioning like "please" in many service contexts.

Practice Tips

  • Describe your daily routine using time adverbs: Korán kelek. Most dolgozom. Későn fekszem.
  • Practice the -ul/-ül pattern with languages: Magyarul tanulok. Angolul beszélek.
  • Take five adjectives and form their adverb counterparts, then use each in a sentence.
