Questions (प्रश्न) is an essential topic in Hindi grammar that you will encounter early in your studies. Question words: क्या (what/question marker), कौन (who), कहाँ (where), कब (when), कैसे/कैसा (how), क्यों (why), कितना (how much/many).

Understanding questions is one of the first steps toward communicating effectively in Hindi. As a beginner concept, it provides the foundation for many other grammatical structures you will learn later.

Once you are comfortable with questions, you will find it easier to understand many other aspects of Hindi grammar.

Common Mistakes

Placing क्या at wrong position

  • Wrong: आप क्या हैं भारतीय instead of क्या आप भारतीय हैं
  • Right: For yes/no questions, place क्या at the beginning of the sentence
  • Why: When क्या means 'what', it goes where the answer would be

Confusing कैसा and कैसे

  • Wrong: आप कैसा हैं instead of आप कैसे हैं
  • Right: Use कैसे with plural/formal subjects (आप), कैसा with masculine singular
  • Why: कैसा agrees like an adjective

Forgetting oblique with question words

  • Wrong: कौन लड़का को instead of किस लड़के को
  • Right: Use oblique forms: कौन → किस/किन before postpositions
  • Why: Question words also have oblique forms
