Reported Speech in Irish
Caint Indíreach
Overview
Reported speech (indirect speech) is how you relay what someone else said, asked, or commanded without quoting them directly. In Irish, reported speech uses the conjunction go (that) + eclipsis for statements, an/ar for reported questions, and go/gan for reported commands. Like English, there is often a shift in tense when reporting past speech.
The basic structure is straightforward: Dúirt sé go raibh sé tuirseach (He said that he was tired). Here, the original statement "Tá mé tuirseach" (I am tired) shifts to the past dependent form go raibh and the pronoun changes from first to third person. These tense and person shifts follow logical patterns.
Reported questions, commands, and statements each have their own structures, making reported speech a comprehensive topic that draws together many aspects of Irish grammar including dependent verb forms, conjunctions, and mutation patterns.

Common Mistakes
Forgetting to shift tenses
- Wrong: Dúirt sé go bhfuil sé tuirseach (present in reported past)
- Right: Dúirt sé go raibh sé tuirseach.
- Why: When the reporting verb is in the past, the reported clause typically shifts to a past tense as well.
Using "má" instead of "an" for reported questions
- Wrong: D'fhiafraigh sé má bhí mé réidh
- Right: D'fhiafraigh sé an raibh mé réidh.
- Why: Reported yes/no questions use an (whether/if), not má (which is for conditions, not questions).
Forgetting "gan" for negative commands
- Wrong: Dúirt sé liom ná bheith déanach
- Right: Dúirt sé liom gan a bheith déanach.
- Why: In reported negative commands, ná becomes gan + verbal noun construction.
Usage Notes
In everyday spoken Irish, tense shifting is not always strictly applied, especially when the reported information is still currently true. You might hear Dúirt sé go bhfuil sé tinn (He said he is sick) if the person is still sick. However, in formal Irish, the tense shift is expected. The verb d'fhiafraigh (asked) is the standard verb for reporting questions, while dúirt (said) and d'inis (told) are used for statements and commands.
Practice Tips
- Report five things someone told you today, using Dúirt sé/sí go... with appropriate tense shifts.
- Practice converting direct questions to reported questions: "An bhfuil tú ag teacht?" → D'fhiafraigh sé an raibh mé ag teacht.
