Vouloir (to want)
Le Verbe Vouloir
Vouloir (to want) in French
Overview
The verb vouloir (to want) is one of the three essential modal verbs in French. At the A1 level, it gives you the ability to express desires, make requests, and — most importantly — be polite in French. The conditional form je voudrais (I would like) is one of the most useful phrases you will learn, as it softens requests in shops, restaurants, and everyday interactions.
Vouloir shares a similar stem-change pattern with pouvoir: veu- in the singular, voul- in nous and vous, and veul- in ils/elles. Like other modal verbs, it is followed by an infinitive when expressing what you want to do, or by a noun when expressing what you want to have.
The distinction between je veux (I want) and je voudrais (I would like) carries significant social weight in French. Using je veux in a shop or restaurant can sound blunt or even rude, while je voudrais is the standard polite form.

Common Mistakes
Using "je veux" in polite situations
- Wrong: Je veux un croissant, s'il vous plaît. (in a bakery)
- Right: Je voudrais un croissant, s'il vous plaît.
- Why: Je veux sounds demanding in French. Je voudrais is the expected polite form in shops, restaurants, and with strangers.
Forgetting the stem change in "ils veulent"
- Wrong: Ils voulant partir.
- Right: Ils veulent partir.
- Why: The third person plural uses the stem veul-, not voul-. This stem change must be memorized.
Confusing "vouloir" with "vouloir dire"
- Wrong: Qu'est-ce que ça veut ? (meaning "What does that mean?")
- Right: Qu'est-ce que ça veut dire ?
- Why: "To mean" in French is vouloir dire (literally "to want to say"). Dropping dire changes the meaning entirely.
Practice Tips
- Use je voudrais every time you order food or drinks, even in practice scenarios. It should become your automatic go-to for polite requests: Je voudrais un café. Je voudrais l'addition. Je voudrais réserver.
- Practice the contrast: say je veux with friends and family, and je voudrais with strangers and in formal settings. Feeling the social difference will help you choose correctly.
- Make wish lists using vouloir: Je veux voyager. Je veux apprendre le français. Je veux visiter Paris. This practices the structure with infinitives.
