Past Conditional

Conditionnel Passé

Past Conditional in French

Overview

The past conditional, or conditionnel passe, expresses what would have happened under different circumstances. It is the tense of regret, missed opportunities, and contrary-to-fact past situations. When you say j'aurais voulu venir (I would have liked to come) or tu aurais du me le dire (you should have told me), you are using the past conditional.

At the B2 level, the past conditional is essential for sophisticated expression. It lets you discuss hypothetical alternatives to what actually happened, express regrets gracefully, and report what others said about future events from a past perspective. It is also a key component of the third conditional (si + pluperfect / past conditional).

The formation mirrors the passe compose, but with the conditional of the auxiliary instead of the present: conditional of avoir/etre + past participle.

How It Works

Formation

Conditional of avoir/etre + past participle

Subject With avoir (vouloir) With etre (partir)
j' aurais voulu serais parti(e)
tu aurais voulu serais parti(e)
il/elle aurait voulu serait parti(e)
nous aurions voulu serions parti(e)s
vous auriez voulu seriez parti(e)(s)
ils/elles auraient voulu seraient parti(e)s

Main uses

Use Example Translation
Hypothetical past J'aurais voyage. I would have traveled.
Regret J'aurais du etudier. I should have studied.
Polite reproach Tu aurais pu me prevenir. You could have warned me.
3rd conditional result Si j'avais su, je serais venu. If I had known, I would have come.
Unconfirmed past (journalism) L'accident aurait fait trois victimes. The accident reportedly caused three casualties.
Past reported speech Il a dit qu'il aurait fini. He said he would have finished.

Common Mistakes

Using the present conditional instead of the past conditional for past events

  • Wrong: Si j'avais su, je viendrais. (mixing pluperfect with present conditional)
  • Right: Si j'avais su, je serais venu.
  • Why: When the si clause uses the pluperfect (past hypothesis), the result clause needs the past conditional, not the present conditional.

Forgetting past participle agreement with etre

  • Wrong: Elle serait parti.
  • Right: Elle serait partie.
  • Why: As with all compound tenses using etre, the past participle agrees with the subject in gender and number.

Confusing aurais du and ai du

  • Past conditional: J'aurais du etudier. (I should have studied -- but didn't)
  • Passe compose: J'ai du etudier. (I had to study -- and did)
  • Why: The past conditional of devoir expresses regret about something you should have done but didn't. The passe compose of devoir means you were obligated and fulfilled that obligation.

Using the past conditional in the si clause

  • Wrong: Si j'aurais su...
  • Right: Si j'avais su...
  • Why: Just as with other conditional types, the si clause never takes the conditional. Use the pluperfect after si for past hypotheticals.

Usage Notes

The past conditional is a marker of sophistication in French:

  • Devoir + past conditional is the most common way to express "should have": Tu aurais du is far more frequent than any alternative.
  • Pouvoir + past conditional expresses missed opportunities and sometimes gentle criticism: Tu aurais pu appeler (You could have called).
  • The journalistic conditional (conditionnel journalistique) is used in news to report unverified information: Le ministre aurait demissionne. (The minister has reportedly resigned.) This signals that the information has not been independently confirmed.
  • Mixed conditionals combine different time frames: Si j'avais etudie la medecine, je serais medecin maintenant. (pluperfect si clause + present conditional result, because the result is about the present).

The past conditional is equally common in spoken and written French, though the journalistic use is more frequent in written media.

Practice Tips

  1. Write five sentences expressing regrets using aurais du and aurais pu: J'aurais du partir plus tot. J'aurais pu lui parler. This is the single most practical use of the past conditional.
  2. Practice third conditionals by imagining how things could have been different: Si j'avais grandi en France, j'aurais parle francais couramment. Si j'avais etudie plus, j'aurais reussi l'examen.
  3. Read French news articles and identify instances of the journalistic conditional. Notice how it always signals unconfirmed information -- this reading skill is valuable even at early stages.
