Verbs of Motion in Finnish

Overview

Verbs of motion are among the most essential vocabulary at the A1 level. Finnish has several specific verbs for different types of movement — going, coming, walking, running, driving — and each interacts naturally with the local case system to specify direction. Understanding these verbs and their case patterns is fundamental for describing everyday activities and navigating the world in Finnish.

The most important distinction is between mennä (to go, away from speaker) and tulla (to come, toward speaker). These two verbs appear in nearly every conversation and combine with all local cases to express a complete range of directional movement.

Finnish verbs of motion typically take the 3rd infinitive illative (-maan/-mään) when combined with another activity: Menen uimaan (I go swimming). This is one of the most common sentence patterns in Finnish.

Common Mistakes

Confusing mennä and tulla

  • Wrong: Tulen kauppaan (when leaving to go to the store)
  • Right: Menen kauppaan
  • Why: Mennä = going away from the current location. Tulla = coming toward the speaker or reference point.

Using wrong case with motion verbs

  • Wrong: Menen talossa. (inessive with motion verb)
  • Right: Menen taloon. (illative for direction)
  • Why: Motion verbs require directional cases (illative/allative for "to," elative/ablative for "from"). Static cases (inessive/adessive) are for being at a location.

Forgetting the 3rd infinitive for activities

  • Wrong: Menen uida. (1st infinitive)
  • Right: Menen uimaan. (3rd infinitive illative)
  • Why: Movement verbs combine with the 3rd infinitive illative when specifying the activity.

Practice Tips

  1. Daily movement narration: Describe all your movements: Lähden kotoa. Kävelen bussipysäkille. Menen töihin. Tulen kotiin illalla.
  2. Direction drills: Practice each motion verb with all directional cases: Menen taloon/talolle. Tulen talosta/talolta.
  3. Activity combinations: Practice motion + activity: Menen uimaan, juoksemaan, syömään, nukkumaan, ostoksille.
