Verb Types (4-6) in Finnish
Verbityyppit 4-6
Overview
After mastering verb types 1-3, you are ready to tackle the remaining three verb types at the A2 level. Types 4, 5, and 6 are smaller groups, but they include many common and important verbs. Type 4 includes verbs like haluta (to want) and pelätä (to fear). Type 5 includes tarvita (to need) and valita (to choose). Type 6 includes verbs like vanheta (to age) and paeta (to flee).
These verb types share a common feature: their stems are longer than their infinitive forms might suggest. Where Type 1 verbs simply drop the final -a to get the stem, Types 4-6 involve adding syllables to form the conjugation stem. This initially seems counterintuitive, but the patterns are consistent and predictable once you learn them.
With all six verb types mastered, you can conjugate any Finnish verb you encounter — a significant milestone in your Finnish studies.
How It Works
Type 4: Infinitive ends in -ta/-tä (after a vowel)
Rule: Drop -ta/-tä, add -a-/-ä- to get the stem.
| Infinitive | Stem | Conjugation |
|---|---|---|
| haluta (to want) | halua- | haluan, haluat, haluaa, haluamme, haluatte, haluavat |
| pelätä (to fear) | pelkää-* | pelkään, pelkäät, pelkää, pelkäämme, pelkäätte, pelkäävät |
| herätä (to wake up) | herää- | herään, heräät, herää, heräämme, heräätte, heräävät |
| tavata (to meet) | tapaa-* | tapaan, tapaat, tapaa, tapaamme, tapaatte, tapaavat |
*Note: Consonant gradation applies: pelätä (weak) → pelkää- (strong), tavata (weak) → tapaa- (strong).
Type 5: Infinitive ends in -ita/-itä
Rule: Drop -ita/-itä, add -itse- to get the stem.
| Infinitive | Stem | Conjugation |
|---|---|---|
| tarvita (to need) | tarvitse- | tarvitsen, tarvitset, tarvitsee, tarvitsemme, tarvitsette, tarvitsevat |
| valita (to choose) | valitse- | valitsen, valitset, valitsee, valitsemme, valitsette, valitsevat |
| häiritä (to disturb) | häiritse- | häiritsen, häiritset, häiritsee... |
Type 6: Infinitive ends in -eta/-etä
Rule: Drop -eta/-etä, add -ene- to get the stem.
| Infinitive | Stem | Conjugation |
|---|---|---|
| vanheta (to age) | vanhene- | vanhenen, vanhenet, vanhenee, vanhenemme, vanhenette, vanhenevat |
| paeta (to flee) | pakene-* | pakenen, pakenet, pakenee, pakenemme, pakenette, pakenevat |
| lyhetä (to shorten) | lyhene- | lyhenen, lyhenet, lyhenee... |
*Note: Consonant gradation may apply: paeta → pakene-.

Common Mistakes
Confusing Type 4 and Type 1
- Wrong: Treating haluta as Type 1 and conjugating halun, halut...
- Right: haluan, haluat, haluaa...
- Why: Type 4 infinitives end in -ta/-tä after a vowel (not a consonant cluster like Type 3). The stem adds -a-/-ä- rather than just dropping the ending.
Forgetting consonant gradation in Type 4
- Wrong: tavatan (keeping weak grade in conjugation)
- Right: tapaan (strong grade in open syllable)
- Why: Many Type 4 verbs undergo consonant gradation. The infinitive shows the weak grade, while the conjugated stem shows the strong grade.
Mixing Type 5 and Type 6 stems
- Wrong: tarvitenen (using Type 6 pattern for Type 5)
- Right: tarvitsen (Type 5 uses -itse-)
- Why: Type 5 ends in -ita/-itä and uses the -itse- stem. Type 6 ends in -eta/-etä and uses the -ene- stem. Check the infinitive ending carefully.
Practice Tips
- Type identification: When encountering a new verb, first identify its type from the infinitive ending. Types 4-6 are easily distinguished: -ta/-tä after vowel (4), -ita/-itä (5), -eta/-etä (6).
- Common verb lists: Memorize the most common verbs from each type. Type 4: haluta, pelätä, herätä, tavata, pudota. Type 5: tarvita, valita, häiritä. Type 6: vanheta, paeta.
- Full paradigm writing: For each new Type 4-6 verb, write out all six person forms in present tense. Pay special attention to consonant gradation in Type 4.
