Reflexive Pronouns in Finnish

Refleksiivipronominit

Overview

Reflexive pronouns in Finnish are used when the subject of the sentence acts upon itself. The primary reflexive pronoun is itse (self), which declines through cases and combines with possessive suffixes to specify the person. At the A2 level, understanding reflexive constructions helps you express actions directed at oneself and distinguish between reflexive and non-reflexive meanings.

Finnish reflexive constructions are simpler than in many European languages because Finnish does not have reflexive verbs in the same way that Romance languages do. Instead, Finnish uses itse as a standalone pronoun or as an emphasizer, and certain verbs have inherently reflexive meanings without needing a separate reflexive marker.

The word itse also serves as an emphatic pronoun meaning "oneself" or "personally," adding another layer of utility to this small but important word.

How It Works

The reflexive pronoun "itse"

Itse declines through cases and takes possessive suffixes:

Person Nominative Genitive Partitive Allative
I myself itse(ni) itseni itseäni itselleni
you yourself itse(si) itsesi itseäsi itsellesi
he/she himself/herself itse(nsä) itsensä itseään itselleen
we ourselves itse(mme) itsemme itseämme itsellemme
you yourselves itse(nne) itsenne itseänne itsellenne
they themselves itse(nsä) itsensä itseään itselleen

Uses of reflexive pronouns

Function Example English
Reflexive action Katsoin itseäni peilissä. I looked at myself in the mirror.
Emphasis Tein sen itse. I did it myself.
"Each other" He rakastavat toisiaan. They love each other.
Self-reference Puhu itsestäsi! Talk about yourself!

Reciprocal pronoun "toinen...toistaan"

For "each other," Finnish uses toinen (another) in various case forms:

Case Form Example English
Partitive toisiaan He rakastavat toisiaan. They love each other.
Genitive toistensa He tuntevat toisensa. They know each other.
Allative toisilleen He puhuvat toisilleen. They speak to each other.
Elative toisistaan He pitävät toisistaan. They like each other.

Reflexive vs. non-reflexive

Reflexive Non-reflexive
Hän pesi itsensä. (washed himself/herself) Hän pesi auton. (washed the car)
Hän vahingoitti itseään. (hurt himself/herself) Hän vahingoitti häntä. (hurt him/her — another person)

Examples in Context

Finnish English Note

Hän puhuu itsestään paljon. He/She talks about himself/herself a lot. Elative reflexive
Tein sen itse. I did it myself. Emphatic

He näkevät toisensa joka päivä. They see each other every day. Reciprocal
Älä syytä itseäsi! Don't blame yourself! Imperative + reflexive
Lapsi pukee itsensä. The child dresses himself/herself. Reflexive action

Itse asiassa en tiedä. As a matter of fact, I don't know. Fixed expression

Common Mistakes

Using "häntä" instead of "itseään" for reflexive

  • Wrong: Hän katsoi häntä peilissä. (looked at another person)
  • Right: Hän katsoi itseään peilissä. (looked at himself/herself)
  • Why: When the subject and object refer to the same person, you must use the reflexive itse- form. Using häntä implies a different person.

Forgetting case agreement with "itse"

  • Wrong: Puhun itse. (when meaning "about myself")
  • Right: Puhun itsestäni. (about myself)
  • Why: Itse must be in the correct case for the verb's requirements, plus the possessive suffix for the person.

Confusing reflexive and reciprocal

  • Wrong: He rakastavat itseään. (they love themselves — each individually)
  • Right: He rakastavat toisiaan. (they love each other)
  • Why: "Each other" (reciprocal) uses toinen...toistaan forms, not itse.

Practice Tips

  1. Daily routine reflexive: Describe your morning routine using reflexive constructions: Herätän itseni. Pesen itseni. Puen itseni. Note which actions are naturally reflexive.
  2. Itse in cases: Practice itse through major cases: itseni, itseäni, itsestäni, itselleni, itsessäni. Then repeat for other persons.
  3. Reciprocal practice: Describe relationships: He tuntevat toisensa. He auttavat toisiaan. He puhuvat toisilleen. This builds the reciprocal pronoun forms.
