Common Mistakes

Confusing "koska" and "joten"

• Wrong: Olin sairas, koska en tullut. (cause and effect reversed)
• Right: Olin sairas, joten en tullut. or En tullut, koska olin sairas.
• Why: Koska introduces the cause; joten introduces the consequence. Mixing them up reverses the logical relationship.

Using "sillä" at the beginning of a sentence

• Wrong: Sillä olin sairas, jäin kotiin. (uncommon)
• Right: Jäin kotiin, sillä olin sairas.
• Why: Sillä typically introduces the cause clause after the main clause. It does not naturally begin a sentence.

Mixing register levels

• Wrong: Using näin ollen in casual conversation
• Right: Reserve näin ollen for formal/written contexts; use joten or niinpä in speech
• Why: Each connector has a register. Formal connectors in casual speech sound awkward.
