Family and Relationship Terms in Persian

Overview

Family is central to Persian culture, and knowing family vocabulary is essential from the A1 level. Persian has a rich set of kinship terms — more specific than English in some cases (separate words for maternal vs. paternal relatives). Colloquial forms like بابا (bābā, dad) and مامان (māmān, mom) coexist with formal terms like پدر (pedar, father) and مادر (mādar, mother).

Talking about family is one of the most common conversation topics in Persian. You will be asked about your family early in any friendship, and being able to describe your relatives builds rapport quickly.

Common Mistakes

Not distinguishing paternal and maternal relatives

• Wrong: Using عمو for all uncles
• Right: عمو = paternal uncle, دایی = maternal uncle
• Why: Persian distinguishes paternal from maternal relatives. Using the wrong term confuses family relationships.

Forgetting that دختر means both "daughter" and "girl"

• Wrong: Always translating دختر as "girl"
• Right: دختر means both "daughter" and "girl" — context determines which
• Why: This dual meaning is similar to how پسر means both "son" and "boy."

Practice Tips

1. Draw your family tree and label everyone with their Persian term. Practice saying: این بابامه (this is my dad), این خواهرمه (this is my sister).
2. Practice the question: خانواده‌ات چند نفرن? (how many people are in your family?) and answer with details.
3. Learn both formal and colloquial forms for immediate family: پدر/بابا, مادر/مامان, برادر/داداش.
