Basic Adverbs in Persian
قیدهای پایه
Overview
Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs, telling you how, when, where, or how much. Persian adverbs are straightforward at the A1 level — most are single, invariable words that do not change form. Common adverbs like خیلی (kheyli, very), خوب (khub, well), and همیشه (hamishe, always) appear in nearly every conversation.
Persian adverbs typically come before the word they modify. Degree adverbs like خیلی precede adjectives: خیلی خوب (very good). Manner adverbs precede verbs: آهسته حرف میزند (he speaks slowly). Frequency adverbs are flexible but often come before the verb.

Common Mistakes
Confusing خوب as adjective and adverb
- Wrong: Thinking خوب only means "good" (adjective)
- Right: خوب also means "well" (adverb): خوب حرف میزند (he speaks well)
- Why: Like English "good/well," خوب serves both functions. Context determines which.
Placing adverbs after verbs
- Wrong: حرف میزند آهسته (speaks slowly)
- Right: آهسته حرف میزند
- Why: Persian adverbs generally precede the verb or verb phrase they modify.
Practice Tips
- Describe your habits using frequency adverbs: همیشه (always), معمولاً (usually), گاهی (sometimes), هرگز (never) + a daily activity.
- Practice degree modification: add خیلی to adjectives you know: خیلی بزرگ (very big), خیلی خوب (very good), خیلی سرد (very cold).
- Learn adverb pairs: زود/دیر (early/late), خوب/بد (well/badly), تند/آهسته (fast/slow).
