Dialectale Variatie in het Engels

Overzicht

Het Engels is een wereldtaal met enorme dialectale en regionale variatie. Op C2-niveau is het essentieel om de meest voorkomende variaties te herkennen en te begrijpen, ook al kies je zelf voor een standaard variant.

De twee grootste standaarddialecten zijn Brits Engels (RP: Received Pronunciation) en Amerikaans Engels (General American), maar daarnaast zijn er Australisch, Canadees, Zuid-Afrikaans, Iers, Schots Engels en talloze andere varianten.

Andere dialecten

Australisch:

• arvo = afternoon, brekky = breakfast, arvo = afternoon
• Sterk informeel slang; karakteristieke intonatie

Schots:

• wee = small, loch = lake, aye = yes
• Werkwoordsconstructies: I'm away to the shops (= I'm going to the shops)

Iers:

• craic = fun/good time, grand = fine, press = cupboard
• Gebruik van present continuous: I'm after finishing (= I've just finished)

Regionale variatie in het Brits Engels

• Cockney (Oost-Londen): rhyming slang, mate voor aanspreking
• Scouse (Liverpool): karakteristieke klinkers
• Yorkshire: tha voor "you", nowt voor "nothing"
• Geordie (Newcastle): gan voor "go", canny voor "quite/good"

Veelgemaakte fouten

Brits en Amerikaans mengen zonder bewustzijn

• Kies één variant en wees consistent, zeker in formele schrijftaal.
• Sommige combinaties (kleurspelling Brits + woordenschat Amerikaans) zijn verwarrend.

"Chips" verkeerd begrijpen

• Brits: chips = patat; crisps = chips
• Amerikaans: chips = chips; fries = patat
