Modal Verbs (μπορώ, θέλω, πρέπει) in Greek
Τροπικά Ρήματα
Overview
The modal verbs μπορώ (can), θέλω (want), and πρέπει (must) are among the most useful words in Greek at the A1 level. They allow you to express ability, desire, and obligation -- three essential communicative functions.
All three are typically followed by the construction να + subjunctive verb: Μπορώ να σε βοηθήσω (I can help you), Θέλω να φάω (I want to eat), Πρέπει να φύγουμε (We must leave). Greek does not have an infinitive, so this να-construction replaces it entirely.
A key difference among the three: μπορώ and θέλω conjugate for person (μπορώ, μπορείς, μπορεί...; θέλω, θέλεις, θέλει...), but πρέπει is impersonal -- it stays the same regardless of who "must" do the action. The person is indicated by the verb after να: πρέπει να φύγω (I must leave), πρέπει να φύγεις (you must leave).
How It Works
Core Concept
μπορώ (can), θέλω (want), πρέπει (must) + να + subjunctive. πρέπει is impersonal (doesn't conjugate for person).
Key Patterns
| Greek | English |
|---|---|
| Μπορώ να σε βοηθήσω. | I can help you. |
| Θέλω να φάω. | I want to eat. |
| Πρέπει να φύγουμε. | We must leave. |
| Δεν μπορείς να μείνεις. | You can't stay. |
Conjugation of μπορώ (can)
| Person | Present | Past (Imperfect) |
|---|---|---|
| 1st sg. | μπορώ | μπορούσα |
| 2nd sg. | μπορείς | μπορούσες |
| 3rd sg. | μπορεί | μπορούσε |
| 1st pl. | μπορούμε | μπορούσαμε |
| 2nd pl. | μπορείτε | μπορούσατε |
| 3rd pl. | μπορούν(ε) | μπορούσαν(ε) |
Conjugation of θέλω (want)
| Person | Present | Past (Imperfect) |
|---|---|---|
| 1st sg. | θέλω | ήθελα |
| 2nd sg. | θέλεις | ήθελες |

| 2nd pl. | θέλετε | θέλατε |
| 3rd pl. | θέλουν(ε) | ήθελαν(ε) |
Πρέπει (must) -- Impersonal
Πρέπει does not conjugate for person. The person is shown by the verb after να:
- Πρέπει να φύγω (I must leave)
- Πρέπει να φύγεις (You must leave)
- Πρέπει να φύγουμε (We must leave)
Structure: Modal + να + Subjunctive
All three follow the same pattern: modal verb + να + subjunctive verb.

Common Mistakes
Using the wrong endings
- Wrong: Applying endings from a different verb group or tense.
- Right: Use the correct endings for modal verbs (μπορώ, θέλω, πρέπει) as shown in the formation tables above.
- Why: Each pattern in Greek has its own specific set of endings. Mixing them produces forms that do not exist.
Translating directly from English
- Wrong: Applying English grammar rules or word order to Greek modal verbs (μπορώ, θέλω, πρέπει) constructions.
- Right: Follow the Greek pattern, even when it differs significantly from English.
- Why: Greek and English express many ideas with fundamentally different structures. Direct translation often produces unnatural or ungrammatical results.
Neglecting agreement
- Wrong: Forgetting to adjust related words (articles, adjectives, pronouns) when using modal verbs (μπορώ, θέλω, πρέπει).
- Right: Ensure all elements in the phrase agree in gender, number, and case as required.
- Why: Greek is a richly inflected language where agreement is mandatory, not optional.
Usage Notes
At the A1 level, focus on recognizing and producing the most common patterns for modal verbs (μπορώ, θέλω, πρέπει). You do not need to master every exception yet -- building confidence with regular forms is more valuable at this stage. Pay attention to how native speakers use these patterns in everyday contexts like ordering food, asking for directions, and making small talk.
Greek speakers are generally patient and encouraging with learners. Even if you make mistakes with modal verbs (μπορώ, θέλω, πρέπει), context usually makes your meaning clear. The key is consistent practice with high-frequency forms, which will become automatic with exposure.
Practice Tips
Create personal example sentences: Write 5-10 sentences using modal verbs (μπορώ, θέλω, πρέπει) that relate to your daily life. Personal relevance strengthens memory. For example, describe your morning routine, your family, or your plans for the weekend using the patterns from this lesson.
Active listening practice: When watching Greek videos or listening to podcasts, keep a tally of how often you hear modal verbs (μπορώ, θέλω, πρέπει) patterns. Pause and repeat the sentences you hear. This bridges the gap between passive recognition and active production.
Progressive difficulty writing: Start with simple sentences, then gradually add complexity. First master the basic pattern, then combine it with other structures you know. Review your sentences after a few days to spot any persistent errors.
