Can and Cannot in Welsh

Gallu a Methu

Overview

Expressing ability and inability is an essential A1 skill. Welsh uses "gallu" (to be able) and "methu" (to fail to / cannot) within the standard "bod" construction. Additionally, "Ga i...?" (May I...?) is used for requesting permission, and "alla i" and "fedra i" are common spoken forms for "can I."

These expressions allow you to talk about what you can and cannot do, ask permission, and understand when others describe their abilities or limitations.

How It Works

Ability: Gallu (can)

Welsh English
Dw i'n gallu nofio. I can swim.
Mae hi'n gallu siarad Cymraeg. She can speak Welsh.
Dyn ni'n gallu dod. We can come.

Inability: Methu (cannot) / Ddim yn gallu

Welsh English
Dw i ddim yn gallu dod. I can't come.
Mae hi'n methu cysgu. She can't sleep.
Fedra i ddim aros. I can't wait. (spoken)

Permission: Ga i...? (May I...?)

Welsh English
Ga i fynd? May I go?
Ga i ofyn? May I ask?
Ga i ddod hefyd? May I come too?

Note: "Ga i" triggers soft mutation of the following verb-noun.

Spoken Short Forms

Welsh English Region
Alla i ddod? Can I come? General
Fedra i ddim. I can't. North
Elli di helpu? Can you help? South

Common Mistakes

Forgetting soft mutation after "Ga i"

  • Wrong: Ga i mynd?
  • Right: Ga i fynd?
  • Why: "Ga i" triggers soft mutation of the following verb-noun.

Confusing "gallu" (ability) and "cael" (permission)

  • Wrong: Dw i'n gallu mynd? (meaning "Am I allowed to go?")
  • Right: Ga i fynd? (for permission)
  • Why: "Gallu" is about ability (can physically/mentally do). "Cael" / "Ga i" is about permission.

Using "methu" and "ddim yn gallu" incorrectly

  • Wrong: Dw i'n methu ddim.
  • Right: Dw i'n methu. or Dw i ddim yn gallu.
  • Why: "Methu" already implies inability, so you do not add "ddim." For the alternative, use "ddim yn gallu."

Practice Tips

  1. List your abilities: Make a list of things you can and cannot do in Welsh: "Dw i'n gallu nofio. Dw i ddim yn gallu canu."

  2. Practice permission requests: Use "Ga i...?" in various situations until it becomes natural.

  3. Use "methu" in conversation: "Methu" is very common in speech. Practice using it as an alternative to "ddim yn gallu."
