Bod - Past Tense (Preterite) in Welsh

Bod - Gorffennol

This article is part of the Welsh grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

Overview

The preterite (or simple past) of "bod" has forms beginning with "bu-": bues i, buest ti, buodd e/hi, buon ni, buoch chi, buon nhw. At the A2 level, these forms are used to express "I was (somewhere/doing something) for a specific period" — as opposed to the imperfect "roeddwn i" which describes ongoing states or habitual actions.

The preterite of "bod" is less commonly used than the imperfect in everyday conversation, but it is important for talking about completed stays, visits, or periods of time: "I was in Spain for a week" (Bues i yn Sbaen am wythnos).

How It Works

Preterite Forms of Bod

Person Affirmative Negative Question
I Bues i Fues i ddim Fues i...?
You (sg) Buest ti Fuest ti ddim Fuest ti...?
He/She Buodd e/hi Fuodd e/hi ddim Fuodd e/hi...?
We Buon ni Fuon ni ddim Fuon ni...?

When to Use Preterite vs Imperfect

Preterite (bu-) Imperfect (roedd-)
Bues i yn Sbaen am wythnos. (I was in Spain for a week — completed) Roeddwn i'n byw yn Sbaen. (I was living in Spain — ongoing)
Buodd hi'n sâl am fis. (She was ill for a month — recovered) Roedd hi'n sâl. (She was ill — state at that time)

Common Mistakes

Confusing preterite with imperfect

  • Wrong: Roeddwn i yn Sbaen am wythnos. (when meaning a completed visit)
  • Right: Bues i yn Sbaen am wythnos.
  • Why: The preterite emphasizes the completed, bounded nature of the experience.

Not using soft mutation in questions/negatives

  • Wrong: Bues i ddim...
  • Right: Fues i ddim...
  • Why: Negative and question forms use the soft-mutated "Fu-" forms, not the affirmative "Bu-."

Over-using the preterite

  • Wrong: Using "bues i" for all past statements about being somewhere
  • Right: Use "roeddwn i" for descriptions and ongoing states, "bues i" for bounded periods
  • Why: The distinction matters: "Roeddwn i'n hapus" (I was happy, describing state) vs "Bues i'n hapus" (I was happy, for a period).

Usage Notes

The preterite of "bod" is more common in Southern Welsh. In Northern Welsh, speakers often use "roeddwn i" for both functions or use alternative constructions. However, the "bu-" forms are understood everywhere and are important for formal and written Welsh.

The question form "Fuest ti erioed yn...?" (Have you ever been to...?) is a very common conversational pattern worth memorizing.

Practice Tips

  1. Talk about trips: Describe past holidays using the preterite: "Bues i yn..." with duration.

  2. Contrast with imperfect: Take the same scenario and express it with both tenses to feel the difference.

  3. Practice "erioed" questions: Ask "Fuest ti erioed yn...?" about different places.
