Overview

Adverbs add essential detail to your sentences by telling you when, where, and how something happens. At the A1 level, learning common adverbs will make your Welsh much more expressive and natural-sounding. Many Welsh adverbs are formed by adding "yn" before an adjective, similar to how English adds "-ly."

Welsh adverbs typically appear at the end of the sentence or after the verb construction, though time adverbs can also appear at the beginning for emphasis. The formation pattern with "yn" triggers soft mutation of the adjective, which provides more practice with this important grammatical feature.

How It Works

Adverbs of Manner (yn + adjective)

The particle "yn" before an adjective creates an adverb. "Yn" triggers soft mutation:

Adjective Adverb Meaning
da (good) yn dda well
cyflym (fast) yn gyflym quickly
araf (slow) yn araf slowly
tawel (quiet) yn dawel quietly
hapus (happy) yn hapus happily

Common Adverbs of Time

Welsh English
nawr / rŵan now
heddiw today
yfory tomorrow
ddoe yesterday
bob dydd every day
weithiau sometimes
byth never / ever
bob amser always
yn aml often

Common Adverbs of Place

Welsh English
yma here
yna there
adre(f) home(wards)
tu allan outside
tu mewn inside

Examples in Context

Welsh English Note
Dere yma! Come here! Place adverb
Mae e'n rhedeg yn gyflym. He runs quickly. Manner: cyflym → gyflym
Dw i'n mynd nawr. I am going now. Time adverb
Mae hi'n canu'n dda. She sings well. Manner: da → dda
Dyn ni'n mynd bob dydd. We go every day. Frequency
Dw i'n codi'n gynnar. I get up early. Manner: cynnar → gynnar
Maen nhw'n dod weithiau. They come sometimes. Frequency
Dyw e byth yn hwyr. He is never late. Negative frequency
Mae hi'n gweithio'n galed. She works hard. Manner
Dw i'n mynd adre. I am going home. Place adverb

Common Mistakes

Forgetting soft mutation after "yn" (adverb)

  • Wrong: Mae e'n canu'n da.
  • Right: Mae e'n canu'n dda.
  • Why: The adverb-forming "yn" triggers soft mutation: da → dda, cyflym → gyflym.

Confusing the two "yn" particles

  • Wrong: Thinking adverb "yn" and linking "yn" (with bod) are the same
  • Right: Both trigger soft mutation of adjectives, but adverb "yn" creates manner expressions
  • Why: Context distinguishes them: "Mae e'n dda" (He is good) vs "Mae e'n canu'n dda" (He sings well).

Placing time adverbs incorrectly

  • Wrong: Bob dydd dw i'n mynd. (though this can work for emphasis)
  • Right: Dw i'n mynd bob dydd. (neutral position)
  • Why: Time adverbs usually go at the end in neutral sentences. Fronting them adds emphasis.

Practice Tips

  1. Add adverbs to existing sentences: Take sentences you already know and add a time, place, or manner adverb to make them richer.

  2. Practice the "yn" pattern: Choose ten adjectives and convert them to adverbs with "yn" + soft mutation. Say them aloud to build fluency.

  3. Describe your routine with frequency: Use "bob dydd," "weithiau," and "byth" to describe how often you do things.
